I think if the steel pins are corroded they could also cause them not to retract, although much more unlikely. Let alone to happen on both sides, especially after a recent brake job where they were removed and reinstalled. I like the steel pin design over the slide pins except for that stupid little cotter pin that holds it in is usually a bitch to get out LOL

If both sides are locking up then it's not a caliper or brake line issue.

Like Bishop mentioned, look closely at the booster pushrod adjustment

This gets my vote as the answer.

I’ve had this happen to me twice. At the end of the mc pushrod, I didn’t leave any play, so pedal up it felt like the brakes were released but it was just barely pushed. Eventually pressure built up and locked up the brakes.

I agree, they come as a set from the factory, so if you replace one you need to double check that free play adjustment when they are replaced.

I got into trouble on a old Lexus LS400 a few weeks ago trying to replace a leaking booster. The only one available was a reman from OReilly, I had to remove it several times to get the adjustment right. Super annoying and wasted a ton of time

One of these will work just as well as the fancy toyota "SST" and you can also just use a pair of vice grip pliers to hold the pushrod out while you make the adjustment.

5 lug Tacoma's have a floating caliper ( single piston ) that has slide pins as you described.

6 lug Tacoma's have a fixed caliper that does not have slide pins as you described, but uses 4 pistons ( two on each side ) and the pads move on the retainer pins.

Interesting, I didn't realize 5 lugs didn't have 4 piston calipers but it makes sense. I guess all I've ever worked on were 6 lug trucks because every Toyota truck I've done brakes on had 4 piston calipers.

5 luggers use nearly if not the same caliper as a car.
