I just finished hauling 1,750 lbs of bottled water in the bed of my 07 Tacoma. It was squating quite a bit, pretty much sitting on the bump stops.

I only hauled it a few miles but I’m sure I’m over the payload weight. It seems to survive okay. (The truck has a 2 inch block lift and bilstein 4600s in the rear.)

1000lbs of sugar? Either you’re building an orbital class sugar rocket, or making a lot of rum!

I make sugar rocket motors, they are fun.

I put over 2,000 pounds of dirt in my bed. I have a 2.7 4 cylinder. Stock suspension.

    Funny thing

I use my Tacomas for my date farm. I was hauling about 1200lb of dates in the bed, but after looking through the thread realized my 4 cyl 2018 has a much higher payload of 1620 lb, which is excellent news for me

My 2018 SR weighs 3980 lbs

It's not that the Tacoma won't haul 2 times the rating because of suspension or frame. It's set up this way so that you can still have enough margin for emergency manoeuvres and braking. Imagine if you hit/hurt someone and insurance company found out you had 2x the weight in the bed just because the truck could. Bad news.

I just hauled 1,100lbs of rock in my short bed. No issues at all, never touched the bump stops.

    Interesting......

Last I knew 1 ton = 2000 lbs. So, using rough math.....1120 lbs divided by 2000 would equal a little more than 1/2 ton.......meaning a 1/4 ton would be close to 500 lbs.

or is the "new" math showing 1000 lbs is a 1/4 ton?????

or perhaps the definition of 1 ton has changed?

    Metric tons are different.

This is why I bought a DiamondBack SE cover, instead of the HD cover. 400lb vs 1600lb rated.

A cross-continent, overweight, on aging Dunflops adventure.

It's amazing how much shit one can acquire, even a minimalist like me. Packing for a NJ to Pacific Northwest trip, I found that all my stuff added up to a whopping 1700 pounds! I weighed everything on scales except the Leer which I estimated at 200 lbs. Despite my best efforts at further gleaning, I still ended up with about 1350 lbs (including my own body weight)- about 300 lbs over the owners manual rating of 1050 lbs.
    P1000695.jpg

I measured the back bumper before and after loading. Some sag, but I think mitigated by the Helwig's I installed- at about 1350 lbs the sag was only 2 inches. I'm 5 days into the trip now between Toledo, OH and Chicago, spent the first 3 days cabin camping and testing the drivability of my overweight Tacoma along some back country roads.

    P1000697.jpg

I still have complete control of the steering, but the front does seem to have a bit more drift to it. So far managing fine at 60-65 mph on the interstates.

3,130 miles later, the 4-cylinder worked like a champ, usually no more then 3,000 RPM even on the steepest 5-6% grades.
