SPRING-LIKE: Afternoon temperatures across Alabama will remain about 10-15 degrees above average through the weekend; highs will be generally in the 71-75 degree range. The air will remain dry, and rain-free conditions are expected through Sunday. Look for a sunny sky today and tomorrow, followed by partly sunny conditions over the weekend…. morning lows will be in the 40s and 50s.

NEXT WEEK: A cold front will bring rain to Alabama after midnight Sunday night into the daytime hours Monday. Rain amounts of around 1/2 inch are likely, and while some thunder is possible, we are not expecting any severe thunderstorms. Rain will end from the northwest Monday afternoon, and the day will be cooler with a high in the 55-60 degree range.

Tuesday at this point looks dry, but another disturbance will bring showers back to the state Wednesday into Thursday. Highs will be generally in the 60s after Monday. Still no sign of any severe thunderstorm problems in Alabama for the next seven to ten days… See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

DRY NOVEMBER: The month of November featured unusually quiet, dry weather conditions across Alabama. Here are some rain totals for the month, and the departure from average:

    Anniston 2.44” (-2.09”)
    Huntsville 1.62” (-2.63”)
    Tuscaloosa 1.59” (-2.93”)
    Muscle Shoals 1.50” (-2.65”)
    Montgomery 1.42” (-2.43”)
    Birmingham 0.94” (-3.29”)
    Mobile 0.77” (-3.83”)
    Dothan 0.60” (-3.31”)

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Saturday’s SEC Championship game between Alabama and Georgia will be played in Mercedes Stadium in Atlanta (3p CT kickoff). The day in Atlanta will be dry and mild… with a partly sunny sky temperatures will reach the low 70s by mid-afternoon.

ON THIS DATE IN 1896: Early season snow and ice storm struck the southeastern U.S. Eleven inches of snow fell at Charlotte, NC, and 6 inches at Atlanta, GA.

ON THIS DATE IN 1950: A storm system produced three tornadoes in Illinois and one in Arkansas. The three tornadoes in Illinois are relatively rare in December, with only three days with tornadoes from 1835 to 1950. The other years are 1876 and 1949. The same storm system brought significant hail to St. Louis

HIGHS REMAIN IN THE 70s: Spring-like weather will continue across Alabama through the weekend with afternoon highs in the 72-75 degree range for most communities. The sky will be mostly sunny today, followed by a mix of sun and clouds tomorrow and Sunday. While most of the weekend will be dry, a brief shower can’t be ruled out over the northwest corner of the state tomorrow. And, a few isolated showers are possible over the northern half of the state Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: A cold front will bring a band of rain and a few thunderstorms into the state Monday. The front will become parallel to the upper air winds, and will likely become stationary Monday night, and this will keep the weather wet and unsettled. We will have some risk of rain or thunderstorms on a daily basis through the rest of the week… and with some surface-based instability, a few strong storms can’t be ruled out at some point Wednesday through Friday. A little too early to know if severe storms will become an issue. Highs drop into the 50s and 60s Monday and Tuesday, but will rise toward 70 degrees by the end of the week. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 1983: The 1983 Iron Bowl game is one of the greatest in the history of the rivalry. It was played at Legion Field on December 3rd. The game started in beautiful warm sunshine after a stormy night of very heavy rains that caused severe flooding in the Birmingham area. 9.22 inches of rain fell at the National Weather Service Forecast Office, which was on Oxmoor Road at the time. IF the amount had been recorded at the Airport, it would have stood as the all-time 24-hour rainfall record for the city (until Hurricane Ivan). One person was killed due to the flooding in Bessemer.

During the third quarter, a line of severe thunderstorms was approaching western Jefferson County and a tornado warning was issued. The radar at Centreville showed a well-defined hook echo heading directly toward the stadium. The game was not stopped. By ten minutes to go in the game, the rain was coming down in torrents as Auburn tried to control the ball and win the game in the horrible conditions as they clung to a 23-20 lead. The rain began to fall so heavily that you could barely see the field on the cameras.

Fortunately, the storm did not produce a tornado in western Birmingham, or the results would have been catastrophic. But later, the same storm dropped an F3 tornado that heavily damaged the Winn Dixie store at Sky City in Oxford, killing two people. A total of seven tornadoes touched down across the state that afternoon and evening.

Auburn went on to win the game 23-20

Started roughing in a new slim front bumper and reinforcing the frame. Waiting on a tube notcher to come in before I can add the tube.

Pro tip: it’s important to loosely secure things like that blue air hose attachment so that it will fall on your head multiple times.

Leaving for my west trip Friday! I’ll have 14 days to do whatever I want. Camping every night, freecampsites.net is amazing for finding places to pull off the road. Here’s the plan:

-About 4 days worth of driving location to location and back home, does include some very cool pavement scenic drives like Coronado Scenic Byway. Leaves me about 10 days to spend wheeling/exploring
    -1 day in Sedona
-1 day around Las Vegas (not for partying, there’s 4 places from my fav video game Fallout: New Vegas I wanna visit lol)
-1 1/2 days at Alstrom Point on Lake Powell, 20 mile trail
-1 day doing Hell’s Backbone to Boulder, UT
-3 days in Moab doing White Rim trail and Hell’s Revenge
-2 days doing Rimrocker trail, Moab, UT to Montrose, CO
-1/2 day at the Great Sand Dunes, CO

Any other replaces I should try to visit?

We tried to make things work, but alas she is a hefty bitch and I can love her no longer. She will be auctioned off to the highest bidder.

Coronado Scenic Byway is amazing, looks like a postcard picture every curve you go around. White Rim is just as nice, great views every where.

Top of the World is nice.

Four days to drive out and back will not be enough, better add a day or two to that.

Have you called to reserve your permit for White Rim, they only allow a few and they fill up months ahead for certain days. It took us 3 days to do White Rim and another day to do Hell's Revenge so you may want to plan four days in Moab if you do both. No pets allowed on White Rim and you must have a portable toilet.

Gonna be in the 30s and 40s during the day and mid teens at night, dress warm and prepare for snow.

Wish I was going with you.

Good call, I’ll probably skip the sand dunes then if it’ll be that long. I have not reserved yet Bc I don’t know what days I’ll be in the area, it’s towards the end of the trip. I did check, they seem to have a lot of reservations open right now. Not just for the days I’ll be there but currently many openings for this week, I’m hoping I’ll be alright to be a walk in. And yes already have my bucket:D

Took us three days just to drive to Moab. We drove 10 hours a day at around 70 to 80mph all the way, I did make it back on one trip in two 12 hour days driving 90mph most of the way with very few stops.
Man I am jealous, hope you all have a great trip.

ACTIVE WEATHER DAY: A cold front will push a band of showers and thunderstorms through Alabama today, and some of the storms could be strong. SPC maintains a low end, “marginal risk” (level 1/5) of severe thunderstorms for most of the state.

Heavier thunderstorms will be capable of producing strong gusty winds as they pass through this morning. An isolated, brief tornado can’t be ruled out, but is not likely. The line of storms is about to enter Northwest Alabama as I write this at 6:00 a.m…. it will reach places like Tuscaloosa/Birmingham/Anniston/Gadsden in the 9-11 a.m. time frame. The storms will weaken as they push into South Alabama this afternoon as dynamic support weakens.

The rain will be briefly heavy, but no flooding is expected as the storms will be moving along at a good clip.

Temperatures are in the 60s early this morning, but they will fall quickly once the front passes, reaching the upper 40s over parts of North Alabama this afternoon. It feels like spring this morning, but it will feel like winter this afternoon over the northern half of the state.

REST OF THE WEEK: The front will become nearly stationary over the southern counties of Alabama tonight, and that will keep clouds and unsettled weather in place for the rest of the week. South Alabama has a decent chance of showers tomorrow, and North Alabama will be mostly cloudy and very cool with a high only in the 48-52 degree range. Showers are likely statewide tomorrow night into part of the day Wednesday as a wave of low pressure moves along the front.

The weather turns warmer Thursday as the front lifts northward as a warm front… temperatures reach the upper 60s with just a few isolated showers. Then, on Friday, we will be well into the 70s as the warm-up continues. Some Alabama communities could be very close to record highs Friday afternoon. A few scattered showers are possible Friday, but no “wash-out”.

STORMY SATURDAY: A rather dynamic weather system will impact Alabama with rain and thunderstorms Saturday and Saturday night. The air will be unstable, and we will monitor weather parameters closely this week for severe potential. Most guidance shows a positive tilt to the upper trough, and a large degree of front-parallel flow may tend to undercut convection that develops. This suggests that the overall severe threat may tend to remain more isolated/marginal, and for now SPC has not defined a severe weather threat area. But, expect lots of rain Saturday and Saturday night with amounts around 2 inches for many areas. Daytime temperatures should be in the 60s.

Sunday will be mostly sunny and cooler with high in the 50s.

NEXT WEEK: An expansive upper ridge will begin to build across the contiguous U.S. next week, and for now it looks mostly dry and mild. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 1983: A pre-dawn tornado tore through Selma, killing an elderly man and injuring 18 people. This happened just three days after the Oxford tornado on December 3 which also brought loss of life. Some of the heaviest damage in Selma that morning was in the Rangedale Housing Project, Selma University and a Broad Street business district.

Thanks I was wondering about this week. In your opinion, have weather predictions gotten worse? For instance, last night when I checked the forecast for my area, it was 100% chance of rain 7-8am and I didn’t see a single drop on my way to work. I’ve noticed this more in recent years
