First of all, there shouldn’t be a 2WD truck. It should all be 4WD. Having said that, it appears you’ve had not 1 or 2 or 3 but 5 2WD Tacos. So, it doesn’t look like you had any retreats. It’s working just fine for your needs. Stay with it and save money at the same time.

My second Taco was a Prerunner. 2wd was fine with me. I did have a lockable rear diff.

4WD fa sho bc what if the zombie apocalypse happens and you need to drive out further from the city or rougher terrain. You’d wish you had 4WD.

I regret not getting the 4x4 option. simply because I don't feel the need to upgrade a truck every 4 years so I should of just bought what I didnt need so down the road I wouldn't have to buy again IE: leather, extended bed, 4x4, rear locker.
NOW im debating which truck to buy next as oppose to just debating where to explore next.

I don't off road but for me, winters pretty much make 4WD/AWD a necessity. If I lived somewhere else, my priorities would be different.

    Buy what you need.

Bought an 06' prerunner new. Only regret was in 2013 someone stole my chains out of the back end with a canopy on. Had to walk home from work in 6+" of snow.

At 52 years of age I said "fuck that" and bought a 2014 Tacoma Sport. No regrets, I could survive with a 2WD in the Portland area but 4x4 makes things easy.

Do it all over again? 4x4 but not if you don't need it.

2wd trucks are good for what they're for. Hauling things on the road in places that don't have a real winter, or as a prerunner with fluffy suspension. Outside of those usecases a 4wd will be worth the small premium.

When I lived in northern Vermont my trucks were always 4x4s given the amount of snow we got in the winter and because we had a large number of dirt roads (think mud season). Now that I live in south Florida when I bought my Tacoma back in May I went 4x2. I don't off road and auto LSD should be more than enough on any of the dirt or gravel roads I occasionally travel should I need a little extra oomph. I have a truck mainly because of the towing capability to haul my Honda Goldwing on a trailer, and because it's sometimes convenient to have that truck bed on my trips to Home Depot or Lowes. If I had a 4x4 I'd have to set a reminder for myself to use the 4WD system once a month because I would likely never use it otherwise, so I decided to save the money.

It really all depends on the way you use your truck and where you live, and whether or not that extra up-front cost is an issue for you. If you have any doubt at all and can afford it, it doesn't hurt to have it. If you are sure you won't need it based on your use and you live in an area like mine with no snow ever, you can save yourself a few bucks up front and go 4x2. It's a question only you can answer.

I'd never go without 4x4 in my case. Too much snow and I love leaving the pavement. That said, if I lived in the south and stayed on the pavement, I would 100% get a 4x2. 4x4 is an expensive option and is not free to maintain over its lifetime. Plus, the two wheel drive get slightly better mileage without all that weight. Like others have said many times, you know what works for you.

Used to get 2wd then went 4wd. Higher up front costs but better resale value if need be ad the peace of mind to get out of a situation. Won't ever buy a RWD only truck ever again.

Id say 85% of people who own a 4WD have no use or real need for a 4WD. You might be one of them and thats ok.

If it wasnt for the conscious decisions i make to go or do places that ultimatly have nothing to do with my day to day life..id be one of those 85%

Id say your good to go on a 2WD vehicle.

Imo, if you never have the need for 4wd, don't get one. I started with 2wd pickups here where we have all 4 seasons. I was stuck somewhere every spring, and winter. Well, now i guess you always add a winch on your 2wd truck, but back in the day their weren't any good options.

As the owner of 2 2wd Tacomas I would advise you to get 4x4. I inherited both of my trucks. Better to have it and not need it than the other way around. My 3rd Gen would be gone if I could get a new 4Runner for a reasonable price.
