No kidding. I guess I shouldn't be that surprised haha

Ill have to file that info away. Im assuming the 2nd gen design is similar to the 3rd gens?

Should be almost identical to the 2nd gen... It's the same Denso gear reduction starter used in thousands of applications.

Just added toolbox and roof-rack to haul my fishing boat 100's of miles into the backwoods every week. Goodrich K02s, Bilstein 5100 front and back, no lift.
Thats for sure. I changed the started on my old 65 Pontiac Parisienne, my 1970 Firebird Formula 400, and my 86 Ford F150. All very simple, all simple access. A matter of minutes and done.

How did you get the steering shaft back in? I can’t seem to get mine to slide back down into place

wiggle the steering wheel. You have to put the key and make it limber.

On the 2nd gen you do not have to disconnect the steering shaft. My screws were removed, but I could not slide mine out of the way easily.

This whole thing was invaluable, thank you! Getting the starter out of the bottom was tricky - wound up separating solenoid from the motor to get that last little bit of contortion. I did manage to get the new one in whole, with a tiny bit of force.

Now I know to stay away from very deep water in the future - or maybe extend the breathers.

Outstanding write-up, photos, and info. I have to trace a parasitic draw tomorrow and I wanted to research starter info just in case. I went offroading over the weekend and it happened to be particularpy wet. I'll have to see if I can find some sort of starter breather vent kit to prevent water i trision thrpugh the top hats in the future

Cannot tell you how glad I am to have come across this. Going to have to replace my starter in the parking lot of my work Thanksgiving morning. 4 feet of water is not the friendliest to these starters. I'm hoping to be between the 2-4 hour mark and I think with this write up, I'll get there! Thank you for this!

Mine's been submerged twice, after the second time. It was a little rough for a while, but with enough driving it seemed to clear most of the gunk out. But I got lucky and that's how I found this thread because I was pretty sure I wasn't going to be lucky lol

4 ft of water? Maybe after you get your starter replaced put a reminder sticky on the steering wheel

My current plan is to get a ride home form work and change my starter out in my work's parking lot Thursday. She started right up this morning to get the kids to school, but then was finicky after walking the kids in, and now here at work, it just clicks and won't start. I think I've run out of luck with this truck with all the close calls I've had with her.

You'd think I'd learn after the first two times being stuck in cab filling water that I wouldn't do it again. This just means I need bigger tires!!
