When you was a kid, did you ever get your mouth washed out with soap?

Discipline was swift from Mom. She wore a big green stone ring from Avon....I would see the stone just inches from impact.

Dad was more subtle, yet very effective. I don't remember my infraction, although I do remember the punishment. Dad had a wood shop. He took me to the shop. Carefully measured my butt. Sat me on a shop stool. Dad slowly and carefully made a paddle from a piece of 3/4 ply. Sanded all the edges...told me he did this so I wouldn't get splinters. Painted it, put my name on it....... During this time, tears were just rolling. When he was done, he asked me a simple question, "Will this happen again?" "no." Then he said, "To remind you, this will hang on this nail. This was made just for you."

Just one of Dad's discipline methods. Thanks to Dad and me being stupid. He taught me responsibility of one's actions and started me on my path into engineering.

 

Never once.

I was a good boy.

 

Happened to me, but only once. I forget exactly what I said, but I do remember it being warranted in hindsight.

Yeah, on multiple occasions. I was never good at learning my lessons.

Dad: "Go outside and get me a switch, and it better be a good one."

 

If you really want to punish kids make them take a bite out of a deodorant stick

 

Rarely got the soap treatment. Was usually hot sauce. Probably why I really enjoy hot sauce now...

 

Soap was a pretty regular thing for me. Once, when threatened with it, I thought I was really proving a point by taking the opportunity to wash my mouth out preemptively and take a bite out of the bar of soap.

I don't think I sat down for days after my dad beat my ass for that one

 

A few times, found out Ivory doesn't taste that bad. I don't look back on the discipline I received with regret.

 

I have to ask, what is a horse prop?

Sometimes the threat of the punishment is the deterrent, definitely.

My dad learned that taking my bike away was the worst thing he could ever do. I would almost wish for a spanking instead..or he would send me to my room, where I had a nice stereo/TV/VCR/video games I bought myself. He would wait a few minutes till he knew I was using at least one of them, then shut the power off to my room.

 

These stories are great!

I mean that in the kindest way...lol!

We were always threatened but got the belt (and more times the buckle) instead.

I did not repeat the same treatment to our daughters...I tell them stories and they think I need to see a therapist. lol

My cousins would get their mouths washed with soap lol I got smacked and the usual belt but yeah not a myth
