The DRLs are, I believe LED, but the rest of the various lights (head, tail, brake) are not. The only things on my truck that didn't come from the factory are the aFe air filter, and Toyota bed mat. And my current set of tires.

In the days of incandescent lights, the fuel costs of running hundreds of watts of lights all the time, not to mention the maintenance costs of endless burned-out bulbs, was a deciding factor.

There is significant less load on the alternator with LED lights, so they can be more frivolous with “wasted” engine power. That’s why the new change to all lights on, when in DRL mode, because Transport Canada is aware the days of any incandescent lights on a new car are drawing to a close, so the added safety is worth it.

    Good point.
I do understand that added bulbs increase alternator resistance, but the low filament of an 1157 bulb draws 8.3 watts, and side indicator lamps about 3.5 watts each, so that's about 30 additional watts to illuminate the sides and rear of a vehicle. If you used 1157's on high filament at the front (or an 1156), you'd have a combined draw of 86 watts, so not insignificant, but not huge.

Yeah no doubt. Still that’s 86W, plus your 55W x 2 headlights on all the time, for every mile driven, so it adds up over time. I think it wasn’t something they thought the individual user would notice, more of a “millions of vehicles on the road wasting 86W of energy all day long everywhere” kind of aggregate concern. A macro action of your will.

86 watts total. Use 1156's as DRL's like the 2nd gen Tacomas did (in Canada anyway). No headlights needed.

Came stock like this, 2020 Pro. Can confirm tails are on with DRL even when in park with the ebrake engaged.

Lucky, I wish mine did. And every other idiot around me who forgets to turn on their lights at night.

P.S. My '17 Off Road has auto headlights. Could it be a Canada only thing?

Does anyone here from Canada know if Toyota will upgrade to the DRL law on the new 2021. The law came into effect in Sept 2021 and my truck was made in May 2021.
