Another example of how "high" tech is making life easier.

I'm beginning to believe the best way to prevent vehicle theft is to remove 2 wheels and set it on jack stands. Store the wheels in your bedroom.

Speaking of “high tech”, I got a Truck Club steering wheel lock to protect my 1st vehicle (an ‘86 Toyota Extra Cab 4x4 pickup) when I was 16 years old, and almost 30 years later I still use the same one.

If you have an Apple device, it will tell you there’s an unauthorized device nearby. And then it gives you the option to disable it. They are working with Google to do something similar.

Another thought. It would be funny to place your found device at the front desk of the police station and let them deal with it.

Why would they bother to place the tracking device while the vehicle is in an "out of sight" public area like a mall or parking lot, then follow the vehicle back to the owner's driveway where they look more out of place stealing it than in a parking lot? If they are out of sight just steal the car from the parking lot and be done with it. Maybe I'm missing something...

Parking lots have a greater chance of witnesses or cameras.

Driveways at 3 am.......not a high chance of witnesses or of cameras.

Plus they can time the theft to arrive with a some sort of tow truck...........

"technology bad!" Sorta sounds like a non issue that people want to blow up into an issue....

You really want to worry about this, just keep your keys in the middle of your house so thieves can't follow you home and read the codes easily. Otherwise thieves are just going to follow you anyways (for free) find your car in a lot and steal it.

I think step 2 for the car thieves is to electronically copy the car owners key fob codes from the key fob inside the car owners home.

TLDR; Thieves are placing airtags on high end vehicles in parking lots to then track them back to the owners home, and steal at a later time.

This seems pointless, they could just drive around neighborhoods and look for the same cars to steal by eyesight. I dont think this is really an issue. The airtag does not allow an easier access into the vehicle. If anything this is a preventative gps tracker the owners could use, place an airtag in your vehicle and use it to aid recovery if it gets stolen (among other gps tracking options).

And also see what kind of neighborhood they are dealing with. Case the place and maybe get away with more than just a vehicle.

Only with being a victim. Years ago I had an S10 Blazer stolen from me while parked at work. All these high tech gadgets didn't exist at the time though. They did it the old fashioned way and popped the ignition lock out.

Not enough bandwidth on the internet to list.
They don't have access to the key fob RFID. If they know where the car sleeps, they go there and intercept the RFID signal coming from the fob, duplicate it, and drive away like it's theirs.

It's all about the fob. Turn yours off at night and they can't pick up the signal. Otherwise, stash it in an RFID blocking bag. The Apple device is just allowing them to shop.
