OBDII Scanners for 2015-2020

Now that I have newer Toyotas I am looking for a new OBD scanner that gives more information about all of the electrical components. Most of the scan tools stop with the updates around 2013 and the makers are telling me I have to go to the professional level diagnostic tools to get more data. OTC and Bosch diagnostic tools were recommended by the Actron technical people. But looking at the prices of the professional level tools I would need to go into business to pay for them. Has anyone found a diagnostics tool that works well with the newer vehicles for less than $500? I am just looking for a troubleshooting tool that will give running data if needed. I don't think I need something that is plugged in all of the time that reads out to an iPad or phone like the Kiwi 4 with the Fusion App. Any suggestions are appreciated.

 

Was it specifically that you want to read? Generic OBDII data is generic OBDII data... I like Innova units, but Launch and Autel also make excellent tools in the <$500 range. If you're into doing your own diag and repair work, it's beneficial to spend the extra money for a bidirectional scan tool that can perform functions such as ABS brake bleeds, trigger injectors, etc. Those start around $1200.

INNOVA 3160 is what I had for my 2005 Tacoma. And yes I was looking for a bidirectional scan tool for the extra functions you mentioned. The BOSCH and OTC tools started in the $1000's. I might be interested in a $1,200 tool depending on what all it would do. Do you have a brand that you have used that I could look at?

 

I use the Launch Pro x431 Mini; for shade-tree purposes, it's a good compromise between function and cost. It comes with two years of free software updates. Autel also makes some very good ones.

 

Don't forget the alternative of buying an app that works on your tablet, then buy a bluetooth or WiFi transmitter than plugs into your OBD II port. I bought a handheld scanner the year I bought my Tacoma (2008), and it only lists vehicles through 2008. My iPad's app gets updated yearly. I'm just saying...lol

If you are in the market for a <$100 scan tool, highly recommend my suggestion above. You can get the transmitter for ~$25, and buy a software app from anywhere from free to maybe $50. Frankly you can buy a $5 app+transmitter for $30, and it will have all of the functions of your basic (<$100) hand held scan tool.

I suggest you open your app store, and Amazon (or where ever you plan to buy one from) at the same time. I think the app said what OBD II devices would work with it, so I chose a Bluetooth one that was listed. I think most should work, but I had an issue with an older laptop software/OBD II kit I bought off Ebay that never worked. I'm sure it was a software issue, but couldn't get it operational even working with the guy (from WV) who built it.

Haven't had an issue with the app or device. They both work great.

But when shopping, suggest you pick out the features you want in the app first, then find a device that works with it. There are a lot that like to give you things I don't care about. I wanted one that worked as a mechanic's tool. I bought a fairly inexpensive one that gives me basic scan tool functions, but I'll keep looking for an app that gives me more capability. Would love to have the features found in a SnapOn Scan tool...

 

I have had and used OBD-Fusion for years (Post #8) ... what I wanted was one that allowed me like the one I had for my Jeep that let me change TPWS settings and daytime running lights, and the rest.

Then I think you have a problem with your truck. I have a Launch as well as two different Innova scanners and a ScanGauge II - all work perfectly on my 3rd Generation.

crp123 gives me an error also my innova no communication on both just the autel maxysis conects but it doesnt want to power up again thats why im asking which one i can buy that does srs and abs on 3rd gen tacos,tkss
