This is the reason why I switched my allocation from LB to SB...plus for those whom hit moderate trails (I drive a built up jeep right now), that long bed breakover on the Tacoma sucks.... I mean really unless you want to lift it big time most trails I drive on no way a stock tacoma long bed will make it (short bed will have trouble too) w/o major under body frame, transmission, and transfer case damage.
I ditched my F-150 super crew 5'5" bed b/c it couldn't park in my garage and the long bed is a whole 5" shorter overall length so I had to back out and switch my allocation to a short bed....less options but hey I'm a realist in that I'll trade this tacoma in when I get it for the all new 2023 redesign :D with trade in values the way they are why not?
Super popular thread...lots of replies in a couple of days :)

My guess would be about 2-2 1/2” max. I think it all has do with how long your torso is. People with long torso’s probably aren’t happy. I’m just over 6’ and have lots of room. My son who’s almost 6’2” has an even shorter torso and is happy sitting in the back!

Seems like you know what you want - Always go with your gut. Buyers remorse if the worst and always costs more. I will say a short bed makes for tight camping for a family of 4. Easily doable, but I use bed rails to strap coolers and hard cases to. If you want to sleep in the bed or have a bed tent this wouldn’t work. With a cap on the bed I think it would work - you can pack the SB to the gills - but a DCSB is still too short the sleep in the bed. For me I wouldn’t trade for a LB as its too close to an f150 (full size) and I really enjoy the maneuverability of my DCSB.

I went back and forth on SB or LB for a couple months and ultimately went with a SB… I was able to get a much better deal (even pre-covid dealers wouldn’t really negotiate much at all on a LB, and now of course it’s that much harder). The SB is easier to park in short spots, especially in front of places where you’ll hang out into the road, it’s a little easier to maneuver in traffic, and a big part of my decision… it actually fits in my garage!

I never intended to sleep in the back. If I did, I would go LB because I would definitely not fit sleeping in my SB. In my opinion, roof top tents are kinda ridiculous for most people that buy them. They’re expensive, they don’t save all that much time (I can throw my 4 man ground tent up in about 3 minutes), and let’s be real, if you’re not an overlanding youtuber or something, the vast majority of regular working people use them once or twice a year, and end up hauling those big ass ugly things on top of their trucks the other 360 days of the year, so they can save a few minutes not having to pitch a tent. Always seemed nowhere near worth it to me, but to each their own. I think the only way I’d get a RTT would be if I had a utility trailer and put it on top of that. I like to leave camp and explore too much, I don’t want my vehicle tied to the campsite.

I don’t know about you but I’m 6ft and some change, and I can sleep in the short bed. Also it depends on the way you sleep. I’ve slept in a small area comfortably. The diagonal size of a short bed is about 6feet. I say the long bed should be more than enough to sleep in for most people.

Best looking when clean, though! At least it doesn't look like a fleet vehicle like mine.

I'm a sucker for a DCLB. I wished my old 04 had a longer bed.

Ha, yea idk it was just an awkward position to be driving in with that truck.

Tried but nobody around me had any on their lot, found someone in my town with one and I awkwardly stopped by their house to check it out.

the first point is what my final decision is based off of, I don't plan on doing much more than some semi difficult trails around me that I use to beat my '93 up on that was basically stock.

    This is beautiful.

So I pulled the trigger today, thanks to everyone here for the input, ultimately went with a DBLB OR in the lunar rock color, should be arriving soon

Congrats on the decision. If my quicksand DCLB OR is ever totaled I'd replace it with Lunar Rock.

Congratulations! My advice get a smallish lift and armor if you are concerned about 4x4ing. I should have mentioned in my previous post I have sliders .

Got a LB and have been happy. The dog now rides in a crate strapped down in the bed so the extra room is nice to have. Longer wheel base does take a little getting used to in tight parking spots after coming from crossovers.

If it meant what I wanted it to mean, then right on.

Since it most likely means something ultra cringe, hell naw. :lalala:
