Got permission from “the boss” to rescue a 2001 Tacoma 4x4 reg cab. Needs a bit of work but what doesn’t I suppose! Looks to be a fun project, thanks in advance for all the help and resources, it seems to be a very engaged and helpful community… and of course thanks for approval to join!

RE:Black DOG Lila - Thanks! I went to the owners section of Toyota’s website and after vin search I found the frame was replaced in 2010… I’m in New England so there is still plenty of rust. It seems pretty solid except for the mid section of the frame on the drivers side, the low spot on the underside of the frame before it head up to connect the the leaf spring… I hit it hard with a hammer and screwdriver and poked through So I’m going to have to deal with that section and I’m sure as I dig into it a bit more there will be some surprises. There is some surface rust around the wheel wells under the fender flares and one hole in the passengers side on the outside of the bed about the size of a quarter so I’m hoping that doesn’t get too bad either. Cab including doors and cab mounts are solid along with the bed (except for the one hole I mentioned) and bed mounts. It has almost 250k miles (2.7L engine) but starts right up runs and drives well, no apparent leaks, doesn’t smoke. Owner said he sometimes gets a CEL for cylinder 4 misfire and Evap incorrect purge flow. Obvious things I’ve found so far are almost all the door handles are broken including the tailgate, radio and clock don’t work even after I replaced the fuses, 4x4 doesn’t work (4x4 light doesn’t even turn on, no blinking, nothing) maybe actuator, I’m digging through the forums right now for advice on that. Looks like I’ll probably have to order a good amount of vacuum hose as well as several appear to be cracked. Thought it would be fun to mess around with and hopefully bring back to life, the price was right anyway… fingers crossed!

Based on your messages I’d say the taco found a great new home! Congrats I can’t wait to see the progress!
