Recommendations on industrial grade gear oil hand pump

As the thread title states, I am in the market for a diff oil pump that is sturdy, not the cheap plastic Amazon specials (Stinky Pete) that takes 3,248 pumps to deliver 1 quart of 85w-140 into the diff housing. I perform all the maintenance on my family's cars so I don't mind spending a little extra for a pump that is higher quality that will last. Any suggestions?

Not sure about other people here, but I've never needed to use a pump to fill my diffs. I either use a hose attached to the end of the oil bottle, or I use the handy dandy Amsoil "bag bottles".

 

He might have some kind of AWD car with hard to reach fill locations.

 

Yes, we have a '15 Tacoma, '97 4Runner and a 2018 AWD Rav4... in the past I have just used the bottle, just looking for an easier route to simplify things a bit.

 

I have always been curious about this type that you power with a cordless drill.

That's a good point, but once again, I've never needed a pump. My family has had Subaru's, RAV4's and a 3rd Gen 4Runner, Honda's, Mazda's, etc. Not just talking Taco's here

On that note, I'd be curious to see what system you land on OP. My past experience doesn't mean a pump wouldn't be handy and I can almost guarantee using a pump would be less messy.

 

Depends if you want a 55 gal drum or 5 gal pail pump. Just contact the local oil distributor and get one. When I had my shop, those pumps were fine and didn't cost much.

 

I don’t have any experience with them but have heard first hand from several people that suction guns work pretty well.

I bought a bottle hand pump and used it once. Used a bottle and hose ever since.

Going to try one the next time around. Supposedly they can empty an entire quart in two shots.

 

I just watched a YouTuber use the MacTools branded version of this pump, but this is the generic version of that:

get the shortest pump sprayer you can find at wal mart, clip off the tip of the sprayer wand and make a pressure pump out of it. worked for me

I read something along the lines of otc was bought out by an off shore entity. Made in the USA quality followed.

I believe it’s true due to looking at Amazon reviews. Older reviews rave high quality industrial tools. More recent reviews complain of low quality.

 

I have one of these pumps. Bought it at Napa to suck power steering fluid out of the reservoir on my truck. It does work surprisingly well and doesn't leak when doing it's thing.

 

If you're looking for cheap and simple, these work great and beat the hell out of the manual pumps that you get from wally world. I use these for evacuating oil out of bottles, transferring fuel to my kubota so I don't have to hold the 5 gallon tank up above the hood the whole time, and for evacuating the HPOP reservoir on my ford when changing the oil.

 

I went to Autozone on Saturday and bought a Performance Tool Suction Gun used to remove fluids...$13, 1 pint capacity. This post just made me realize it would work well for filling also.
Used it to remove old power steering fluid... worked fast, no leaks.

I used something very similar for my differential fluid change this past summer. Worked great. The one I got has a quick change chuck end so I could just slap my dewalt cordless impact on it. It has a 5/8 end on each side, so keep that in mind. I had to go to home depot to buy a roll of the clear pvc tube to use on it.

I used one of these for my transmission flush. I cleaned it up really well after I used it. The next time I went to use it would not pump and the rubber fins on the inside were breaking into small pieces.

 

I'd be curious to try the drill one.

I'm gonna use my mityvac on my transfer case. They might have a bigger model.
Don't bother buying a knockoff version for a couple bucks less. They leak.



I'm tired of hand pumps. Takes too many pumps. Hard to fit in the area. Barb that pops out the hole. Dirty/messy with sulfur smelling gear oil. Hard to store without getting other things dirty.
I'll deal with the few suction/push effort of the above Mityvac to avoid having to use a gear oil hand pump...

More justifiable for one use though. Maybe not the best for lots of use.

AST makes pumps that are often used for transmission services that require a lot of fluid and leave you with some extra
but it's not the most precise if you're pinching pennies buying 3 quarts $20/ea for a housing that calls for exactly all of those 3 quarts, because the big AST tool still leaves a pool of fluid inside sitting at the bottom which the suction can't reach.
Unless you don't care, have extra fluid, and are willing to throw it in. Then it would work well.
Me personally I'm trying to take the cheap shit OUT of my own tcase (not somebody else's car) and put good stuff IN.
I have a few spare jugs of cheapshit Valvoline from Autozone that I *could* pour in to "buffer" the supply amount to not run out, but I will probably get rid of it...
I suppose if you're done with a service, you can tilt the thing to pour out and collect back into your bottle with a funnel anything remaining, to keep as spare for future use.
