Truck Camping Photo Thread

I come from a backpacking background as well. It's the same, but different.

 

All in good fun and all, but it is funny when you’ve lived out of a backpack on and off for years and someone says they need a larger SUV/truck to live out of for an extended weekend haha.

 

this was all pretty epic - my vision of heaven - and then the last pic of the moon put it over the edge

that is how we used to do family vacations...minus the GPS of course b/c it was the 70's

more snowy heaven!!!

 

We like the paper map for routes and alternatives, etc. But we sure do like the accurate drive times of a smart phone ha.

Lets go camping!

Errr... lets talk camping. Specifically, lets chat about where you camp.

Do you seek out dispersed campsites in National Forests, BLM lands etc?
Do you want a campground with full hookups?
How minimal of amenities do you want/need?
How much do you/would you be willing to pay for a basic site?

Has anyone used hipcamp or other online resource to find a spot?

For those that look for a dedicated space that they know will be there just for them, (ie a reservation) what sites do you use?

Why all the questions? I own some undeveloped acreage. I was considering developing a few sites (designated parking space, raised tent platform, fire ring, composting toilet) on this parcel. Is this something the general public would utilize? (I see thousands of sites on hipcamp, so its obviously working).

I want to be as far away from others as possible. Use Boondocking and The Dyrt apps to find dispersed camping spot.

Could be a really cool thing. Depending on the size, TW yearly meet and trail runs? Land opens all kinds of possibilities

 

freecampsites.net and the iOverlander app both show free BLM land. We only camp at free sites away from others, personally.

If I saw your land on a website as free I'd certainly go camp there (and maybe leave a tip if it was an option) but if there are other free camp sites near you then people may just drive to those instead. There are always those willing to pay! If it doesn't cost you much to develop and you're not using the land for anything else you may as well turn a profit from it!

 

I like doing dispersed camping or camping at less popular campgrounds that have sites that are well spread out. I tent camp so I have no need for hook ups. Having potable water available would be a nice perk. Raised tent platform, parking, and fire ring are definitely solid plans I'd be fine with $5-10/night for a basic site set up with a pit toilet. In more popular/very high demand destinations (Moab vs rando places in WA) I'm willing to pay more- $20/night for a basic site.

I've been to campgrounds with indoor paid showers, but never used them. Debatable if they're worth having around. I certainly don't need or specifically look for showers when picking a campground to go to. A beach park type shower post on a concrete pad could be good to keep maintenance at a minimum? I'm fine with just a rinse in a swimsuit vs. a full shower. Of course, that really only works in warmer weather.

edited to add that having a picnic table at the sites would be nice!

make sure the sites are graded so as to allow for good water run off. Nothing worse than mosquito havens!!!

I would also rally for distance between sites....and not removing any trees or other natural privacy elements if at all possible...part of the reason I go camping is to get away from my "neighbors"

 

Thiiiiis. Trees in between for sure if they exist. Nothing like sitting at your campsite and awkwardly trying to not make eye contact with your neighbors

Adding to the note about grading, making sure the tent platforms are designed to drain well would be great (this is probably obvious, but IMO it's always better to say things). Like a layer of gravel in the bottom then filled with sand instead of just a plain dirt fill? Or maybe being raised will let it drain well enough

@Cuffs please update us on this project! I'm interested to hear what you decide. I'd certainly consider dropping by if it becomes a thing.

 

Front is a SSO slimline with the stage 2 wings welded. They now offer it as a full bumper I believe. Rear is a custom build to allow the back to open without swinging the spare.

 

Would LOVE a FWC on my Tundra . . . very nice!

 

A long term hope/dream was always to get a less rusty 05-06 Tundra than my current one and build a flatbed / FWC combo.

Post as much of the interior as you like! Contender for best long-term camping setup ever in my humble opinion.
