3rd Gen 3.5L and 2nd Gen 4.0 are the same torque (+/- 2lb-ft). Don't be afraid to step on the gas pedal.

Probably wouldn't buy something that inexpensive. But I may just take my insurance settlement and buy a decent used car, get better fuel mileage for the highway, and not finance anything.

I would get the 6. I inherited my dads 2.7 first and third gens dc. The first Gen is ok but the 3rd Gen is slow. Will likely trade the 3rd Gen for a 4Runner once prices are more reasonable. First Gen is staying with me until the wheels fall off.

I have almost 12k miles on my leased 2020 and I have been very happy with it. The only reason to go to the V6 is to get more towing. Its a truck, its supposed to be slow. The V6 doesn't FEEL much faster to drive around, and the transmission does the same nonsense on the highway with the radar cruise control. My lease is up May 5, so I may trade up to a V6 for the towing if they aren't impossible to find. Towing, IMHO, is the only reason to get a V6, otherwise its just more money.

I got the lease special, it costs me $168 a month after taxes. Yeah, I know its cheap. I was on the fence with the taco, but I have really enjoyed this truck for the last 18 months more than I anticipated. Its pretty base, just keyless entry and the tarted up appearance package with blacked out trim and 17" wheels. Compared to the truck I came from, its ultra luxury to me.

Didn't really want a double cab, but its been great. Also, the 5 foot bed seemed like a bad idea, but I got a bed extender thing and I can haul 17' trim without issues. The only issue I have had is the bed mat flying out at the car wash.

Remember there are 5 Toyota distributors in the country, and every one has different lease specials and deals that change monthly. You can shop around, and small town dealerships are happy to ship to just about anywhere.

Update: Went by my local VW dealership to test drive a used Altima. I didn't like anything about the way it drove, and it had some cosmetic issues, so I told the sales guy that I didn't even want to talk numbers. I asked if he had any new Jetta's on the lot and he did have one new 2021 model.

I was barely out of the parking lot on the test drive and knew that I was going to buy it. Totally different feel and responsiveness in comparison to the Altima and the old Focus I've been driving. It was actually fun to drive and rated at 39 hwy and 33 combined. So, I'm now the owner of a Jetta.

Thanks to everyone who responded to this thread.

Well, it's been a week since I purchased the Jetta. Three trips to work and back on mostly highway and two other trips that were mostly interstate. Still have fuel left from it being filled up at the dealership. So here are some initial thoughts.

Nothing bad to say about the car except.... it's not a truck.
Does exactly what I need it to do, which is mainly get great highway mpg.
Great cost savings over purchasing a Tacoma. And will save at least $140 per month in fuel over the Ram I was driving.
We'll see in another 6 months if I can live with a car.

Toyota sales guy emailed to say they had four new 2WD Tacomas on the lot. So, I decided to take a look. One AC 2.7 SR looked good until I saw that it had some add-ons that bumped it to more than 3K above base price. The others were all DC V6 SR5's. Again, no DC 2.7 available and the price of the V6 SR5's were more than I planned to spend at $36K+ with no room to negotiate.

Nope, I don't. But the DC is a preference. The SR AC deletes the jump seats. But the SR AC I saw today had running boards and other add-ons I don't need that increased the price. It killed the value of the truck.
