Need better MPG.

Bought my 2021 Tacoma DCLB in Oct, came with a 2.5 front/1.5 rear lift and 285/70/17, I am avg about 16.5 MPG. I use it for commuting more than anything. Has anyone changed out bigger tires for smaller to get better MPG? More important does it work? Or if you have any other suggestions. Appreciate any feedback.

 

Yes, if you go back to a stock size tire 265's, you will get better mileage.

 

Run your tire pressure @~45 PSI.

 

Go back to stock height and stock tire size, that's about the only thing you can do unfortunately.

 

Tons of threads on this, your actually doing better than most people on 33s. You could put 4.88s or 5.29s in it and maybe gain a little bit back, your power will definitely increase. Or lose the lift and big tires go back to 20 mpg but your truck looks more like a Subaru. Option #3 buy a shit box for commuting and don't drive your bitchin looking truck as much.

 

Had a civic that got way better mpgs. Remember its a truck!

Well lets just say I wasn't revving my engine outside your home @2am.

 

Go to stock SR 245/75r16 passenger tires. Lose the lift, get a chin spoiler, and get a scanguage to monitor your mpg.. use cruise and drive slower.

Both of my crx's never really got below 3rd gear. Got pulled over doing 150... the cop was cool. Couldn't believe he was chasing Honda that fast (since it wasn't a motorcycle)... then saw the dirt/mud caked on my car. I lived down a unpaved alley in a back house. He asked me if I was in the mountains recently. I immediately said yes, and we got to talking about snow boarding. He let me go with a warning.

 

Pretty much on par for that setup, you can gain some or all of it back by reducing the tire size and removing the lift. It will never get great mpg’s due to what it is…

I’m at about 17 mpg with a similar setup. Things that help are, lighter weight tires, narrower tires, smaller diameter tires along with the actual wheel/rim weight considerations.

And that lift doesn’t help, lol. Bottom line, 16.5 is fairly good for that setup.

That’s normal for your setup. Let the truck drink what it needs. Or you have to go back to a stock setup of 30.5 inch tires and reduce your top speed to about 65mph, don’t floor it too.

 

Have you taken the wheel size into account when calculating your mpg?

If you're running bigger tires, then the miles on your trip meter isn't going to be the same as when running on your smaller tires.

The actual miles traveled will be the same however, your bigger tires will have less revolution total.

 

No offense, Kyle, BUT:

I had a NEW 1999 Chevy full size extended cab 4x4 with a 350 and auto tranny back in '99-2000 that regularly got 19-20 mpg combined city/highway!!! Slightly better than my '16 DCLB 4x4 does without the current winter blend.

If that could be done 20+ years ago, it could be accomplished today! And, this isn't a full sized truck with a v-8.

Just my opinion/personal experience.
