Nobody likes bigger antlers than me and I’m blessed with some of the best deer hunting in the country, West Central Illinois. As a biologist you, more than anyone, should know that people hunt for different reasons. Some people are meat hunter’s and some are trophy hunters. Those who only want some meat may not have an opportunity to shoot a doe and sometimes mistake a button buck or a small spike for a doe. Criticizing young hunters for what they shoot may discourage them from future hunting, we need MORE young hunters to keep our sport alive.

I’ve been deer hunting for 47 years, I’m pretty well educated. I have many deer on my wall that score 150 plus. I also know that some people don’t give a shit about score or antlers, period. Again, as a Biologist, you should know that. Maybe you didn’t mean it to, but your first post sounded like criticism to me.

Apologies to 6 and others, 100% did not intend for it to sound that way.

I honestly hate what the internet and social media have done to deer hunting. It’s great to find a monster buck and harvest a monster buck. But, everyone on the internet is an expert and every deer you see posted “needs another year.” I’m on several FB hunting pages and every post is “what’s his age and what will he score?” Who gives a flying fuck? Do you think he’ll look good on your wall and be delicious? Then shoot him. I don’t have any 150” deer hanging. I don’t even have a 120” deer on my wall. But I’m happy with the deer I decide to shoot. I let multiple bucks walk every year. Maybe they make it back to me next year, maybe not, but I’ll still shoot something next year to put meat in the freezer. It’s at the point in the year this season that I’m going to take another doe and 1 more buck (I have 1 buck tag left) just to have meat into next year, and that next buck might be a 4 point or he might be the biggest buck I’ve ever seen…I don’t really care.

We're all hunters, we all have our own reasons for being out there.
I haven't processed a deer in over 20 years, but I've made several people happy by giving them deer. That means something to me.
I hunt only because I love every second of it. My goal every year is to shoot a big deer (but that rarely happens), but if I knew for certain I'd never shoot another deer, I'd still be out there thinking 'maybe it will happen today....'
If you're not breaking local laws, you're alright in my book.

Not tryna jump anyones shit but it really rubs me the wrong way when people say "dont shoot that!" or "Give em another year!" AFTER the animals already been shot? TF you want me to do? CPR? Catch and release? Once you pull the trigger its done. No sense in beating people up about what they chose to shoot. Especially on public land in high pressure areas. I bet 80% of the deer I found this year were shot by someone else. You can tell me to pass and I probably will, but the guy who's down the road probably wont. I'm lucky enough to be picky on what I shoot.

this 100%! Unless you have 1000+ acre closed fence ranch or an agreement with All The properties near you in 5mile radius its really going to be difficult to get any deer past 5yrs old. Sure it would be ideal to manage a deer herd or multiple deer herds but people shoot for multiple reasons...just too many variables out of your control.

I understand where you are coming from, I really do, we’re blessed to have a place to hunt. It’s 44 acres and every side is surrounded by other hunters. We don’t own the 44 acres, a friend let’s us hunt it and I keep it bush hogged for him in return. 75% or better of the big deer I get on camera the neighbors kill them and I’m happy for them.

I will let deer walk, my wife will let deer walk, when it comes to our kids, it doesn’t matter to me what they harvest. I’m just thankful to have 44 acres to hunt on :hattip:
