1st gen - it's got a built engine, a turbo, and waaaaaaay too much to list. 3rd gen - basic-bitch lift, S/C, Pro Wheels
I kind of agree. I have it in my 19 TRD OR... Hardly ever utilize the "dual" feature. Occasionally my girlfriend will say she's cold or hot or whatever, but I'm comfortable, so I remind her that she can set her side to whatever she wants. But that's literally maybe once a month...

Hell I don't even use the auto feature, I basically just use it exactly like a regular ac system 99.9% of the time.

Honestly, any option here sounds great.

I think even if you decide to wait, you'd still find yourself in a dealership "just browsing". lol.

If I had an '18 paid off, I'd still wait a little bit. I'd never jump on the first year models. At least 3 or 4 years in they have worked out the kinks. Plus, all that savings, if you waited long enough you wouldn't have to finance much at all, just drop a nice down payment on it and pay minimal amounts for a couple years.

Either way, congrats on paying off your Tacoma and let us know what you decide.

i agree with people saying to sell privately. dealership will convince you that you are getting a good rate / deal for trading in, its a more peaceful experience but usually way less profitable for you.
i too have thought about selling at a good price for me, but i think everyone goes through that phase of wanting to upgrade. think about why you bought the model you did, and maybe just be content with it unless it is limiting your lifestyle.

I imagine Toyota slapped together a Prius and a tacoma for this prototype.

I would keep it for now. Since there is not many upgrades on 2022. While it is not that fancy. With a cell phone mount, you can use google map. Just save the money and buy half Bitcoin. You will be able to buy a new Tundra or Tacoma whole cash in 2 years.

Test drive a new Tundra and take it to a few areas to test out "parking" it. It's a big vehicle.

OP, I love these kinds of car buying strategy questions. Partially because there really is no 100% correct answer. That's primarily because they involve matters of the heart (I want something new and cool) and matters of the head (what can I afford? what am I willing to pay?).

I will set aside matters of money -- because I assume (or hope) you will not do anything fiscally irresponsible. So, I am making that assumption. I personally don't care for the pay cash for everything crowd -- but that is an entirely different financial discussion which is beyond the scope of this conversation.

So, let me tell you this. I had a 2005 Access Cab. Great condition. Well maintained. With a growing kid, a wife and two dogs it just wasn't as much room as we needed on road trips, etc. Could I have made it work? Absolutely. Did I have the financial resources to upgrade? 100 percent. So we moved into a 2020 Double Cab. I have to say it was totally worth it. Never looked back and we are just more comfortable. Am I interested in looking at the new Tundra? I am. I don't know if I will buy one but I definitely want to check it out. Very happy with the 2020 but interested in at least checking out the new Tundra to see how it feels.

So, back to you. It sounds like (and I could be wrong) you really don't want to keep what you have. There are too many things in the next generation -- that extra space among them -- that you find interesting and intriguing. From what I can tell keeping what you have is not an option for you -- if you go with your heart. :)

So it comes down to the 2020 TRD OR and its extra features versus the new Tundra. That is a tough one. So the only way to resolve that is to go sit in both. Get a good feel. The Tundra may be so big it is too big. Or it may be perfect for you. Spend some time sitting in both so you have a good feel for the extra room. Is the Tacoma enough or do you really want the extra room in the Tundra? You won't know until you really see it first hand.

Finally, work the actual numbers. Get a real price for the Tacoma and a real price for the Tundra. Then you need to figure out the game of would you rather ... would you rather have the space in the Tacoma and finance $15K (estimated) or would you rather have the space in the Tundra and finance $20 to $25K (again, estimated). Only then will the decision become clear enough.

I will say this ... you are in a great spot ... if I were you (and the money is less important to me) I would wait a bit because now is a terrible time to buy a new vehicle. We don't know how long that will go on, however.

But the two things you should do is get a real feel for each (in person, in the back seat, not online) and a solid feel for the numbers.

Wish you luck in your decision ... definitely keep us posted on what you decide to do !

OP, I would trade it in on a '22 Taco. There are a lot of differences between your '18 and the '20+ Taco's. the '20 model year was a mid-cycle refresh and there are enough changes that comparing my neighbors '17 TRD Sport to my '20 TRD OR are night and day.

For me, I like the added Tech in the '20's (yes I'm talking about adaptive CC, BSM, Park Assist, Auto High-Beams), the electric power seat is okay, but since I'm the only one who drives my Taco I don't get a lot of use out of that. My GF and I always have our temps set differently in the cab so the dual-zone CC is a nice feature, especially since my other truck ('04 Silverado) has it as well. I flat-out *love* the LED headlights too!

If you're really curious, just go test drive one and see what you think. I was actually ready to pass on getting a Taco based on my neighbors '17 but driving and playing with a '20 convinced me otherwise.

the latest Tacomas still have some issues that I wouldn’t be happy with: the weak leaf springs would need to be addressed, and then there’s the 6000 towing max that I might want to exceed, and we all know the transmission is badly programmed. Also, considering the new tundra can get equal or greater mpgs than our Tacoma’s with substantially more power output, it kind of puts the NA 3.5L in the antiques pile. I suspect Toyota will put a turbo I4 in the 4th gen Tacoma with something like 310/325 hp/torque.

idk, I’m keeping mine for now. And even if I decide in the next month or so to order a Tundra, by the time it arrives at the dealership the deal might suck and I’d end up walking, so I will never know for sure if I’d be getting a new truck until my signature is on the papers. (The deal might suck because they can’t offer a trade value for the taco until around 30 days prior to delivery of the tundra . . . . . so if that ends up being June 2022 . . . . and the used market takes a shit, I’m going to get low balled on my trade, no deal.)

    To be hypocritical:
I agree that the dual climate is over rated. Particularly if you go the premium route & have seat heaters. That said, there were many times headed to/from skiing that one of us had the sun on us and the other didn't and one was always uncomfortable. That was in my '17 SR5 w/o it.

    To be a further hypocrite:
I got out of that '17 SR5 DCLB (purchased used in early '18) & into a new '21 OR DCBL for a few creature comforts & sunroof. Was it a wise/smart decision? Absolutely not. Did I get what I WANTED in a Tacoma? Yup! This was my first new vehicle and ended up being a bit of a mid-life crisis and I'm ok with that. Not a fan of a couple more years of payments but it is the truck I've wanted for a long time, it makes me happy and I can afford it. I abused the cap out of my '99 Tacoma for a few years before I grew up and it ended up lasting me just shy of 300k. I'll absolutely be baying this one and expected it to last me that 300k as well. Time will tell on that front.

We can all give our opinions but ultimately you are the one that will make the decision of wants vs. need.
