Drop your spare, check the tire pressure and spray with your favorite oil based lubricant LPS, 3-in-1, PB Blaster, protect your cable, gears, chains from salt slush, mud, whatever.

Do it before you head out for your long trip.

Like to add to this…. If not to grease it then to figure out how it works so it’s not a pain when your on the side of the highway with a flat at night. Also to find out your jack won’t lift the rear tire high enough with a 2” lift.

What if living in a state where there isn't salt slush, doesn't see mud (unless heavy highway rain), or whatever? Should it still he done?

    Asking for a friend.

I’d suggest everyone check once a year. Also add anti-rust inhibitors if in the rust belt.

Even better, every spring and fall.

My truck's undercarriage is in a constant state of dripping Fluid Film. Including that spare tire carrier. No worries here.

I feel left out but also thankful I don't have to do this stuff. I never knew people in the East sprayed their cars with oil etc on the bottom.

I’ve lived in the rust belt my whole life and never heard of fluid film until I joined this forum. I suspect only a minority of people spray lubricant all over the underside of their automobile each year.

Personally I would never bother to spray lubricant on painted surfaces. It’s not better then paint and it creates a huge mess. I do occasionally use it on unpainted parts; especially moving parts thar need lubricant to work properly.

Painted parts that get abused like rock sliders and the hitch receiver get sanded and repainted before each winter.

Fwiw, I'm in AZ and I do it to some degree. But mostly cause I get bored and like finding excuses to fondle my truck.

After reading about this last night, I checked the operation and condition of the spx tire storage and lowering. After 3 winters It worked well and still looks like when it came from the showroom although it was dusty up under the tire. No sign of corrosion of any kind. Bonus. Entering her 4th year of operation and still looks good underneath.

You could use a ratchet strap to keep your suspension from drooping
