    well… I found a camper shell for $400 on FB marketplace. it just needs some paint, but I ain’t too worried.

    what brand is best for rail mounting systems? wanting to mount a prinsu rack

    Regardless of what you go with, get the Sherpa mounts. Depending on the design of the shell, those types of racks can pull the rails up from the shell. There are some threads on it here. Personally, after reading on here, I went with the Sherpa Crows Nest, but I don’t have it yet (ordered last week), so I can’t comment on whether I like it or not.

    The reason racks like the Prinsu tend to pull the tracks up from the shell is that the racks are straight, while the tracks are curved (they follow the line of the shell roof). If your rack has only 4 mounting points (feet), you should be OK. The problem is that racks for long beds typically come with 6 mounting points. In that case, you need to put spacers (stacked washers work) on the end mounting points.

    This is a Leer shell with the factory optional Thule mounting tracks, and a Prinsu rack with cargo basket attachments. Note the spacers.
