Wish I could join, finally over the cold I had last week that kicked my ass for 5 days. Big Bear is getting a ton more snow this week it looks like. Gonna be out of town through Monday

How safe would it be to take small children on the pioneer to big bear route?

I've only done part of that route once and we branched off to do Heartbreak ridge (harder 4x4 trail). But from what I remember it's an easy fire road, but up the mountain there will be a lot of snow. I would just make sure you don't go solo (more than one truck), have recovery gear just in case but will likely be fine.

I would do it. If you have tires and 4x4 it will be fine. Chains would just about take all the risk out. You can get some fresh snow to yourselves. It gets slippery when the sun starts going down. Finish early if you're worried about it.

Ended up running Rattlesnake > Burns canyon > Heartbreak Ridge on Sunday... A lot of snow up the mountain and couldn't quite get up to the roundabout of heartbreak..probably for the better...made it past the sluice right before the loop. @daveeasa as @eon_blue said it'd be best to go with another truck and a rope just in case.

Thanks guys. I think I'd like to try this once my Tundra is ready, or perhaps in the Tacoma on mostly stock setup. I'm thinking my 6 and 4 year old might enjoy seeing daddy s his pants like they do.

Funny you mention that, when we did Heartbreak a couple years ago the same thing happened. There was a shady uphill section near the top that still had a good bit of snow with a bunch of ice frozen underneath. You could only get up about 1/3 of the way then the truck would just start sliding back downhill. Was sketchy AF so we turned around and took the fire roads up the rest of the way.

had a similar experience on White Mountain up in Big Bear during winter/snow once. The uphill sections were just way too icy and you weren't getting up without chains at least.

If anyone wants to plan a non-mountain/ snow trip I’m game.
    Maybe a high desert spot.

I might be up for it depending on where we go. We need to get above like 4500 feet I think. You have any ideas?

Anyone up for a day trip tomorrow? Probably cruise out to Ocotillo and up the S2. Hit Oriflame and then Laguna area to hopefully catch some snow. Nothing crazy as far as wheeling goes.

I'm down to go toward big bear or somewhere not as far south. I'm in Lakewood. Ocotillo is far for a day trip.

Its the opposite for me. I’d love to hit Bear but it’s a bit of a drive for a day trip from SD.

You two should coordinate and do a trip though! Seems like that would be the logical thing to do.

did anyone drive around Big Bear in the last week? I wanted to go up last weekend, but it didn't work out. Going to try to get up there this weekend.

@eon_blue you trying to get up and drive in the snow Friday or Saturday?
