So I was looking in to options. On some Jeep XJ's they use the cowl as the intake. I'm kinda curious about doing something like that. I'm limited on what I can run cause of my lack of inner fenders.

This is what I'm talking about:

Seems kinda interesting. I'm not sure what's behind our cowls or how water proof they are tho.

Edit: Looks like something 2nd and 3rd gen guys have done with pretty good results.

I mean the stock one is pretty water tight with RTV. I actually RTV'ed my drain holes in the stock box shut, which is why rain water gathered and didn't drain on its own. Get a stock box and tubing, get a dorkel, rtv the joints and you are set.

@malburg114 that's cute, get it over the hood and let me know how well the CAI works.

*full disclosure I have been drinking all night and my shit talking is not srs

Woah your truck must rip  This is exactly what I'm thinking of doing. When it stops raining in my area I'll pop my cowl cover off and see what room I have to play with in there.

On a side note, it's raining in my area and I'm afraid to drive anywhere

I've been looking for a stock box. They are pretty rare around here which is why I'm exploring other options.

I have experience with CAI's and water... I can attest that they don't mix well

If I’m in water over the hood, my fuse box, transmission dip stick and a lot of other stuff is under water. Along with my ass sitting in the seat.

Shit talking aside. I’d rather run the stock box but with how much cutting I did and having to shorten the cai tube there was no way to make the stock one work. Stock one is easy to clean (10 bucks for a new filter at Walmart) and a cai provides next to no power gain. But you do get a cool whistle noise

The whistling noise of my CIA is the only reason I bought this truck in the 1st place

Not if you are moving. When I had it come over the hood and halfway up the windshield all that came in the cab was via the steering column hole in the firewall.

    Also bring it back:

@ForestRunnerFrank99 did you have to drop your trans when reinstalling the engine? I’ve replaced two engines in a manual (dropped trans out completely) and an auto (just dropped it ~1”) and am about to replace another engine with a manual and am wondering how much you had to drop it.

I didn't drop it at all. I just slid it the motor in there and it all managed to line up. I was able to wiggle the trans enough with my hands and a crow bar to get everything aligned. I did it by myself too so it wasn't terribly difficult.

I haven't really seen any good pictures or reviews of those Spectre inline air filters they sell on Amazon so I thought I'd make a little post about it. I bought the
Spectre Performance 9832 Inline Air Box with 4" Inlet Filter. It just showed up a couple days ago so I took some pictures of it:
    20211226_105549.jpg

First thoughts, it's larger then I thought for some reason. It's about 10" x 6" and the inlet and outlets are 4"! I'll need some adapters to get this to work in my truck.

Then I just had to take it apart and see what made it work:
    20211226_105819.jpg
In order from left to right: Canister, top piece, clamp band, rubber seal, air filter.

I was not expecting the rubber seal in it! I though the metal band just clamped it all together, metal on metal. This should make it pretty dang water resistant. The air filter is a little smaller then I thought, especially when compared to my CAI one, but I think if you were to unroll it, it wouldn't be any smaller then the OEM flat filter, so it should work without any choking issues (hopefully).

It goes together pretty interesting as well:
    20211226_105838.jpg
The filer is the 1st to go in, it has a lip so it rests on the rim of the canister.

    20211226_105857.jpg
Then the rubber seal slips over it. The seal has a lip so it sits right where it needs to.

    20211226_105912.jpg
    Followed by the band clamp

    20211226_105929.jpg
And then the top piece. Finally just clamp er down.

The filter sits in there pretty nicely with a little room around it:
    20211226_105943.jpg

    20211226_105938.jpg

So far I'm happy with it. I'll work on a system for mounting this in my truck and keep you guys updated!

It was held together with these tiny screws so cleaning was a pain. I like the one you have it seems like they updated it.

Go on car-part and just have a stock intake shipped from the Midwest where all the rusty tacomas are in junkyards. Everyone seems to think they can out engineer Toyota on intake design with snorkels and CAI’s but the reality is that the stock box works great.

I'm not trying to out engineer Toyota, just experimenting. Maybe it'll help someone else.

Yup! This was confirmed after seeing the actual location of the air intake tube, dorkels are virtually useless if you keep the panty liners on.

Also calling BS on having water going halfway up the windshield with no issues or leakage cynicalrider.

Still interested to see what you come up with as I still have the stock airbox, but can't keep mud from being flung directly into the intake tube no matter how much license plate deflector engineering I do.
