My 07 Prerunner TRD Sport access cab 2wd rarely sees dirt/gravel, so I wanted a good long lasting HT tire. I installed a set of Firestone Destination LE3 tires today. Very happy so far. Mine came with Futura Scaramblers on it which which were 7 years old but still had 9/32 tread left, but were a little to noisy for me and a little slippery in corners in the rain. Mavis tires and battery had the best price.

I am on my 3rd set of defenders on a camry. Ran 2 down to 2 32nds. I did not notice any loss of traction. After over 1000000 miles on defenders all conditions on North East mountainous interstate road I can tell you this without a doubt they cut through water. Imaging driving down the interstate at 80 and you encounter a solid inch of water running over the road 20 yards wide on a curve. They cut through water without walking. I put a set on my Tacoma to but don't have many miles on them. If you value your safety over money get a Michelin defender tire.

As a different view on the michelin, I had mine for about 4 years. At 5/32 tread they started getting really bad in rain, slipping from a start and generally unsafe feeling on anything other than dry. I didn't give them a chance to get me into trouble and replaced them with firestone le3. They've been great so far and have full depth tread swipes like the michelin, will see how they hold up.

    Questions @kingston73
    Age of the Michelin tires?
    Which tire model?

FWIW, I have a set of GY Wrangler SRA on my truck, date code 2016. They are terrible in wet or snow or ice. My daughters 2wd SUV has Michelin Defenders, date code 2015. That SUV is better at traction than my 4wd truck in wet, snow or ice. Her tires show no sign of checking or cracking, even though the SUV lives exposed to the weather. IIRC, the mileage on those tires is pushing 50K.

    Another anecdote for evidence.

Frankly, I intend to replace the GY when the budget allows. No shopping around, straight to Michelin Defender LTX M/S in 265/65-17 with new TPMS and balance.

Mine were defender ltx but not sure how old. I was surprised with how poor they were in rain with that much tread left

Remember, the first few minutes of a heavy rain will float all the oils, coolant and nasty off the road surface making for a slippery mix. A light rain will take much longer to float the schmutz into the storm drains.

    Old rubber losses grip.

The tread depth only give the road schmutz a place to go so the "lugs" can make contact with the road.
