Well, winter looks to finally have arrived in Central Iowa.

So far today, we have had rain, snow, rain, freezing rain, snow and more rain. The snow is light, but the rain is the light sprinkle stuff that freezes on contact.

The roads have become a slimy mess for all vehicles with the layers of schmutz.

4WD is completely worthless in these conditions.

I'm staying home today, not driving anywhere. I'm not in the mood to play bumper cars.

Yeah, not much you can do on ice. 4wd will still help get you going and stay going in the right direction, but not going to help you stop or avoid others. I love driving in snow, but always try to stay home with ice.

We had 1.5" overnight in the burbs of Porkland... No one on the road, pleasant 5 mile commute in to empty offices.
Snow was light and is usually wet in our area. Felt good to get some fluid running through my transfer case.

Real winter tires! I put new on the Taco this fall and realized I'd been on crap winter tires for years. The rubber was harder than my Michelin's (3 seasons). Blizzak this time, not Pooper Coopers.

The softer rubber compound makes a big difference. Below 7deg C all season tires get too hard on the tread. I don't need to go into 4wd nearly as soon as before.
