I’m torn. The trucks getting faster with shock tuning and I’m starting my cage. I’ll tie the engine cage into the cab cage and I want to redo the rear shock mounts and incorporate them into a bed cage to tie into the cab so it’s all one piece.

Do I cut the bed up and just hang bedsides and run some tubes for a bed cage to mount the shocks and then fill it all in with panels as I still want to be Able to “toss” little things in there

or leave the full bed, redo the shock mounts into a low profile bed cage?

it’s only a single spare laying down with a box for tools and spares along with a cooler and floor jack.

I don’t like my bed setup now because the tools are hard to get to but I do like where the cooler sits. I did like the old way with the spare by the cab and tool box at the back and would be how I realistically would like to do it again and maybe do a fuel cell.

anyone whose gone full bed cage regret it? And if anyone has pictures of theirs that’d be great.

I’d start looking at other platforms that have full tube rearends and see if you like anything you see. Most caged trucks on here don’t have a lot of nice mounting for stuff. Many of them are simply to accommodate shocks, maybe bump stops, a spare or two, and a jack. If you’re redoing your whole truck, I’d link the rear now too ;)

Does it matter if your bed is cut up to you? If you’d like to keep your bed intact I have a cage that ties into the frame through the bed without cutting any holes since my shocks lay under the bed.

Don’t automatically assume you need rear tubes coming out of the rear wall either - newer full on luxury prerunners and super sleepers have been keeping the cab cage in the cab without tying into the bed cage in the traditional angled tubes. Remember those SAS’d silver Terra Crew trucks kept the cage in the cab too.

I’ll keep looking at pictures to see if I can find something I like. Best way I can describe what I want is the old Comanche build by cutlerfab on pirate.

I planned to come out the top of the cab at minimum with tubes to the bed just cause I like the look. The beds already cut up and has a ton of holes so that doesn’t bother me. If I keep the bed I’ll remake the wheel wells to be a little cleaner.

And no links for the rear. I’ll add an anti wrap bar to save the leaves but the rear works to well for me to justify links.
Part of me wants to shorten the wheelbase though but I’m not sold on it yet purely incase I find a 4door cab

Well this is impressive. 4th gen 4Runner but mounts look similar to ours.

wow that bolt is rusty!!! makes me think that building some custom mounts to make them a bit shorter really shouldn't be too dificult.

Yeah. He said that he thinks his cv bound up while his front locker was on and it caused them to snap since he has RCV axles.

I swear anytime someone breaks something in the front there is a front locker involved..... so my takeaway is never get a front locker.....lmao

lol that's why I was hesitant to get one but I'm glad I did, it makes certain scenarios way more controlled/possible without pulling a winch.

    keeping jersey dirty
i've seen people ask questions for a while wondering about the next weakest link with RCVs. Maybe that's it
Would kinda be an easier trail fix and simple spare part to carry tho

I would’ve assumed the gears to be honest. I wonder how much different their front diffs are, if at all. He said one mount is thinner than the other and that’s what snapped first, and all the load went to the other mount and of course that failed.

Regardless, I’m impressed because I’ve never seen front diff arms break.

sorry to randomly hop in, but I ran into this on my routine "has randy done anything cool recently" search while browsing

I wanna say I read somewhere there was a difference in the 2003 4runner diff mount arms that made them weaker, and kevin's is an 03. Toyota made a decent amount of changes on the 03 and 04 4runner before the 05 model year when the new Tacoma also came out.

ironically, I also saw some broken diff mounts on GXOR this morning and it was also a 2003

Ahhh, that would make a whole lot more sense then. Weak mounts, V8, wheel speed, RCV, all a recipe for disaster.

yeah probably a combo of a lot of goodies together.

as for differences in the diff itself between the 4runner and tacoma, pretty sure they are the same as tacomas on all v8 4runners and the 05-09 v6 4runners. only difference is on the 03 and early 04 4runner v6 models only, they came with a 4 speed a340f transmission and paired that 3.91 gears and a slightly different ring gear carrier. Thats why ecgs offers like a thicker ring gear option for the clamshell 8", its for those early front diffs

Yea all those parts are still sitting in boxes unfortunately. I pester these guys for knowledge all the time is the only reason I posted my Wallet draining LT purchases.
I'll jump in there with some pics once I tear into this thing. The intake plenum/injector swap is really the only worth while mod I've finished in a couple years.
Most of the people on the 4Runner forums are more concerned with 6th gen and EV speculation, and the "will it rub" threads kinda rubbed me out. If it wasn't for you, Mason and a few other 4th gen guys, I probably wouldn't even get on there anymore.

I'm just yanking your chain haha. I actually have spent way more time here now than t4r, and I now have way more posts here than t4r. Like you said, just more activity and technical discussion to read on TW. Also the quantity of local guys is a lot more here on TW

TW is the reason why im LT and SC on my 4th gen. I blame all these guys lol. Its a whole different animal here than the T4R forum. I think you bought Todd's rear end a while back IIRC steal of a deal.
