I’ve got a weird issue I’m trying to diagnose. I’ve got a 2011 Tacoma where I all of a sudden have no headlights. No lows or highs. The drl’s are still working and the high beam indicator comes on on the dash. Everything works until I turn the knob to the headlights, then I have nothing.

I do have retrofit Morimoto hid projectors, however, there is no one single control module that I can think of that would cause both headlights to just randomly not work. I don’t see any one fuse that would control the headlight functions, and I can hear relays clicking when turning the headlights on.

I’m not seeing much when researching this issue, so I’m open to ideas on what the issue could be. Thanks.

Do you have a wiring harness for the ballasts? If so it could be the harness relay.

Have you checked for power at your headlight connectors?

Malfunction if the head relay or dim relay will prevent operation of both headlights. If you are getting the dash indicator for head and high beams that eliminates those relays however since they are fed downstream. Without knowing how you have retrofit lights wired hard to say, but probably something in the lights themselves and not truck wiring.

The dash indicator uses a separate ground than the headlights.
However, the front turn signals use the same ground as the headlights.
If the turn signals work, it likely not a ground problem. But you can check it anyways since you need to check for power.

Like mentioned before, it's most likely your Ballast-wiring and/or Morimoto lights, not the vehicle wiring.

I’ll go through the wires tomorrow. I built these headlights almost 5 years ago and have never had an issue. Seems odd that something would happen out of the blue. Tonight I had to run the truck somewhere (I live in the country) so I just had the headlight switch on so I could run the fogs. Halfway through the drive my right headlight came on, but not the left. If it was a ballast issue it baffles me that both of them would malfunction at the exact same time, but who knows. I’ll have to do some digging tomorrow.

I would guess that it's the headlight/dim relay. Had one of those go bad this year on my 2012, sounds like the same issue. Any autoparts store should have that relay

I’ve had Morimoto retrofits since 2014. When I experienced your issue, it was either the ballasts or the Moto control. I always keep a spare of each plus the bulbs for situations like that. I stocked up during their Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales. They lasted me around 5 years.

What bulbs, ballasts, & relay harness are you using?

This happened to me and the relay module before the ballasts went bad and I had to get a new one. Some run 2 and some share the same. I have the gold Morimoto one. I’d bet that went bad on you. From what a I hear it’s not uncommon.
