I’m about to get regeared next Monday and am still deciding weather to do the 4.3 or 4.56. My stock 3.73 gears are always searching when I go uphill and I live about 20 miles up on a mountain so anytime I drive there’s uphill driving. And I can’t really do 4th gear cause it’s freeway driving and a little too fast for 4th. I’m at like 1600 rpm on the freeway on flat ground seems super low and bogs a lot when driving around town
Question is should I do 4.3 or 4.56 ? Thanks

That is a fair price, but honestly unless they are very familiar with toyota rear ends I would send it off to ECGS... They are the go to for thousands of toyota owners and have very competitive pricing.

Also I have 4.10s with 33'' Auto trans and 4.0l and am very happy with where its at. This ratio puts it back very close to stock. 4.56 is overgeared imo but if you are ever considering going with 35s it might be something to consider.

Yea I’ve heard they’re the go to place in the Bay Area, id consider the 410 but I think it’s harder to get . I’ll probably go with the 4.30

With an auto and 33’s I would do 4.10
    Manual and 33’s 4.56

    Auto 35’s 4.56
    Manual 35’s 4.88

If 4.3 and 4.56 are your only options the. Go 4.3

I have 33s and I went 4.56 rpm isn’t too high on the freeway. I sit at around 2200 rpm at 65
    And 3000 rpm at 80
    But I also have true 33s 33x12.50 17
    Not 285s
    Also auto

Auto... if you’re not running armor or any extra huge weight items, run 4.30s if you have armor and heavy items, go 4.56

Did anyone have a problem with their truck searching for gears when going uphill before they regeared and did the regear help fix it ?

I have been researching on this matter myself. I have 2011 TX/Pro Offroad Editon with E-Locker 4x4 6cyl Auto 5 Speed with 3" Suspension Lift Axle ratio currently is the stock 3.73. I am running 285/70/17 Faulkins A/T =32.7 in height. I was debating between 4.30 and 4.56 from everyone's input on here which I very grateful for I think I am leaning towards the 4.56 due to the steel bumpers, aluminum full armor protection underneath. I do Drive Freeway to get to places and here in AZ most people are doing 75-80+ mph average speed, along with wheeling in desert frequently. I dont drive the truck as a DD, just on my days off or going places.
Since I added all the upgrades my truck is not as peppy as it use to be on stock stuff. I also have to use 4th gear up hills to stay up with traffic or pass someone. Just curious is anyone out there running the 4.30 yet with the same or close set up as me , with weight of armor.

I went with 4.56s. I have 255/85r16(33.3”). It’s way better and kinda feels like stock around town. On the highway I’m around 2500@75. I’m also full armor, Winch, Shell, and sliders. Mileage seems to be about same as it was in stock form. 15mpg average

I added 750 lb of weight (armor) to the truck. 4.30 gears 285 75 16 M/T E rated. Just did a trip from Cali to Missouri. Averaged 14 MPG auto trans. If I decide to change gears I will go with 4.88.

Just remember that gear calculators don't tell the whole story. Bigger tires are also heavier, which means more HP (higher RPM) required to maintain a given performance level. With wide 33s and an auto, I wouldn't consider anything taller than 4:56. If I wheeled a good bit, and was willing to lose a bit of high speed highway driving, I would go with 4:88. I'm running 4:56 with 255/85-16s and a 6 speed.

Thanks for the recommendation Badger. I was wondering if you have the manual or the auto trans?

Thanks all for the input. Greatly appreciated. I am going with the 4.56 since its in the middle not too low or too high for what I need. I think 33' tires is sufficient for me, I am not making a rock buggy as I have owned many in past as use the truck for hunting, camping, and medium wheeling nothing extreme. I am also going to toss in a ARB front locker as well since its going to be torn apart anyway and I wont have to do deal with it in the future. I do plan in the future as well as installing a marlin crawler taco box as well. I have wheel for years Jeeps and Toyota's and I miss the low crawling speed with a Atlas transfer case. I love my tacoma, but miss the low crawling and not having to ride brakes. See ya on the trails.

Circling back. I have a V6 auto with 33" skinnies. No armor I'm a pre-runner. But might add sliders. Mostly highway and remote camping trips. 4.10s or 4.30 I'm on the fence. Getting a TrueTrac thrown in there. I don't mind how it feels right now, just tired of the gear hunting
