They sold more in 21 than in 20. Seams like it was a demand issue more than a supply issue.

I helped contribute to their sales but bought my truck at MSRP.

My work has a contract for staffing their Texas plant and employers almost anywhere are struggling hiring and retaining people. (I work for the staffing industry)

I just read that Toyota knocked GM out of the #1 spot, for the first time since forever.

Here are the sales by year:

    2005 168,811
    2006 178,351
    2007 173,238
    2008 144,653
    2009 111,824
    2010 107,198
    2011 110,705
    2012 131,753
    2013 159,485
    2014 155,041
    2015 179,562
    2016 191,631
    2017 198,124

    2019 248,801
    2020 238,805
    2021 252,490

So all time high. It's impressive they delivered this many trucks with all the stories of shortages. What would the number have been if they could build it as fast as people wanted them?

Do leases count as a sale?

I think the 4runner sales are ridiculous as well, considering it's the same generation for 13 years now....

I call bs then. I wouldnt count a rental as a sale. But thats just me. They were practically giving these trucks away earlier in the year on leases.

Nah but if you think about it, the leases will either be bought out or returned to Toyota to be resold. I would question fleet sales more than leases.

    More a matter of timing.

This. Fleet sales are responsible for huge chunks of each manufacturer's sales. The Ford Fseries is consistently the best selling vehicle in America and that's primarily due to fleet sales.

I think the good sales of the current 4R has allowed them to take their time developing the next Generation.

I highly doubt "primarily" is the correct word, implying the majority are fleet sales. I would say partially. It's not like that's cheating anyway, make the best chassis with useful payload, make the most sales to people who need a work truck. I see Tacomas used as fleet vehicles around my area for pest control etc.

As much as I love the new '22 Tundra, I predict they will get very little fleet sales due to the fact the payload is very low for "1/2 ton" segment. The Tundra CrewMax 4x4 6.5' bed SR5 with only option of TRD OR package is only 1450lbs payload.

The majority of fleet sales are repeat customers, if I'm not mistaken. And no, it isn't cheating. It is a big reason the Tacoma is so popular as well.
