Holy shit. At risk of sounding like the precious little entitled millennial snowflake that I am...

I never realized living in California how blessed I was to have access to so much public land.

    :D

I am from New England - I did a cannonball run, the BLM lands and all that are insane out that way. Every night I needed to kip up it was "oh yeah go half a mile that way and park up and you're good" versus around here finding a camp spot outside of a campground is doable in Vermont and some of the verrrrry remote parts of NH and ME. But Mass, CT, etc is all super densely populated and all private lands - no way you can kip up the night there.

I legit can't get over how clueless I feel looking at this map... I call myself a "get off my lawn millennial" .... closing in on 40 years old... but seriously just always took it for granted how much public land I had in my backyard. I can plan days-long trips and just haphazardly follow an interstate with my finger and point out five or six different BLM options for each leg of the trip along the way. I'm going to appreciate it a lot more than I used to having seen this!

I made it from NYC to LA and back and found plenty of spots along the way east as well, but Eat is definitely not as easy. The week or so from Amarillo out to Redondo Beach and back to Houston was easy, and it was definitely a different feel east of there. Much more rest stops. I know a bunch of spots up around here because I'm local and can scout them but otherwise I'm depending on internets.

UP Michigan has some cool spots too.

The top one was lake Michigan on the southern side just over the bridge. Second one is high rock bay, East of Copper Harbor (small, SMALL town) through the woods about an hour to get out to a little jetty you can kip up on, on Superior.

Great now the words out and all the vandals will come here again. Good target practice anyway.

am Pro grille w/lights, black tailgate letters, black badging, 265-70-17 Duratrac "c", Rear seat platform,
I'm in Michigan. Like some other states our hunting and fishing are our biggest draws for tourism. My county alone has over 358 lakes (another reason they call us the Great Lake State). Back in the 70's and early 80's we used to drive up north to both state and national forest land and you could "free camp" almost anywhere that wasn't posted not to. 40 years later and most of our former camping areas are completely closed to camping while a few still allow camping but only in small designated areas by paid permit only (now referred to as "dispersed camping"). We used to head up fishing in my old '82 Toyota SCLB SR5 4x4 truck with a cap and a carpeted bed. We would just pull off the road at midnight and sleep in the bed of the truck til sun-up and fish all day. If the fishing wasn't very good we'd just jump back in the truck and hit another spot. Sometimes we'd set up camp 2-3 different places in a single weekend. Now you have to arrange everything ahead of time and pre-pay for your camping sites unless you happen to find an opening in an expensive private campground. My whole family is originally from Fairfield and Milford, CT and my parents couldn't get over all the public access land when they moved to Michigan in 1963, just a couple of months before I was born.
