Help found a leak!

My man. Some sort of context is needed

 

Tailshaft /Output shaft seal.
It needs to be fixed.

I believe there might be a “newer/ updated seal”.


Yet another reason, why we should have KEPT the dip stick for the transmission.

No leaks to speak of. Agree with your comment though.

 

Easy enough fix. You do need a new seal. Take off the center carrier and drop the drive shaft ( I think that may give you enough slack). Pry out the old seal and get the newer upgraded one. Fit it into place and slip the shaft back home.

 

Tell me about it, not having a dipstick. I had a pinhole leak from rust in one of the trans cooling lines and it dumped enough fluid that the trans started slipping and banging shifts. No way to check the fluid level... no way to top it up on the road since you need to get under, pull the plug and have some sort of pump to get fluid in. Not sure who thought it was a good idea to lose the dipstick and underhood fill point. If I knew, I'd fly to Japan and throttle him.

 

Land cruiser of a certain year model that I cannot remember, has a dipstick. Did the preliminary "leg work" quite a few years ago. Photos are probably still on this forum, and might be found with the search function.

That blurb above about the "checking level by the fill plug method is more accurate" may well be true, but this ignores the fact that LEAKS HAPPEN. Like in my case where I was about 50 miles from home. I would have liked to have had the ability to top it up but I had to nurse it home hoping the trans wouldn't totally shit the bed. Luckily it made it. If this happened on a real road trip you'd end up needing a tow truck and/or a stay in a repair shop whereas if you had an under hood fill tube it could easily be topped up to finish the drive home.

And in the OP's case a dipstick would allow him to check the level to ensure it wasn't getting too low and to add a bit if necessary... But no, to even check the level you have to get the engine up to the correct temp and pull the plug. I'm sorry, but this is almost unbelievable. I know those of you who haven't had a leak (yet) probably don't care. But you will some day.

It would be great if any of these would fit. I assume they would all mate up to the trans but not sure which dipstick placement and routing would work?? If we found the right one it would be easy peasy to swap out whilst do a routine tranny fluid and filter change service.

 

Anyone ever look into the fluid level COLD? It would be easy to get under, unbolt, check level if it were 1) set to specs when hot, then 2) checked when cold and was x.xx below overflow.
Of course I would need to invent a gauge to sell all TW members, get rich, move to Hawaii, and sip cold ones on the beach...

 

That really wouldn't be helpful. You'd still need to go through the fill plug under the truck. If you are already under there it is trivial to warm it up and check it properly.

 

Will it break a u joint trying to get enough slack to get into it?
