First off I’m not a computer geek at all so don’t drag me under the bus to far.

I have this MacAir I hardly use and it’s about 5 versions out of date. So I plan on updating to the current version. Before I do this I think I need to back it up to an external hard drive because I don’t want to take a chance losing the important documents and photos.

My question is……. If I back up my McAir to a external hard drive, can I use the same hard drive to back up my wife’s computer also without overwriting or losing my stuff?

Can a external hard drive be partitioned? I have never used one before. Thanks

As you're seeing, yes you can. If you want to be more security geeky about it, you can encrypt the partitions. I'm long online, but not a Mac kinduva guy. Plenty of Youtube as you see.
