2017 with 101,00 miles. Motor locked up and it appears to be a main bearing. Has anyone else seen failure with this low of miles?

Sorry to hear OP. Nobody has issues with the 2.7. Might have just gotten unlucky? Who does all of the service to the vehicle?

I’m afraid you’re probably right with being unlucky. Bought it with 80,000 and I’ve done the maintenance since with oil and filter from Toyota.

I hate to say it but maybe the previous owner abused it with little to no maintenance and kicked it down the road?

I bought it as a salvage title. Looked like a deer hit and all cosmetic damage,we repaired it. The previous owner had to put about 40,000 on it a year and all I know on maintenance is it had been serviced within the last couple thousand miles at a Dealership. Truck was very clean

Add this unfortunate circumstance to the list of reasons why I only buy new autos of any kind.

Could be just a garden variety who-woulda-known mechanical issue or it could be the previous owner
    didn't take care of it.

Some call me crazy, others call me worse than that....

At my sorry-azz-age my 2021 will outlast me, and so be it....

I've seen Toyotas failed from 8k to 600k

You take a chance everytime you start it.

Hopefully its a painless experience to replace it. The 2.7 is stout and is very rare for failure.

Impossible to say what caused the failure, likely just a lubrication fault, a plugged passage etc.

Probably didn’t do anything wrong. I had 102000 miles on my 2016. I traded for a 2022 with 10 miles cause I was getting nervous. I know they say these Toyotas last forever, but when you own one forever ain’t that long. I did pay extra for a 7 year or 100000 mile warranty on this one. Sometimes things happen.

Probably had one or two oil changes in those 80k miles.

Someone here bragged they hadn’t changed the oil in 40 or 50k miles. My girlfriends mom said that maintenance is the next owners problem. She isn’t spending the money.

It is why I prefer to buy new. Or with maintenance records.

Lack of maintenance abused engines usually knock or rattle or smoke or have low oil pressure problems long before they seize.

Yep, either lack of oil, or never changed it.

There are so many ways to ruin an engine. Overfilling oil can cause damage. So, it may have been the previous owner, but not necessarily. Could be the last service done etc. I have a special shop I take my vehicles to, that have a higher level of mechanic, just because of issues like this. I pay more, but peace of mind is worth it to me.

My neighbor had a corolla that locked the engine up and know she takes good care of her cars. The mileage was low on it also.

My first thought was a foil seal from a 5qt jug clogging a passage.

My 3.5 seized up at 130,000, oil changed every 5000 with synthetic. No warning. ( 2009 Highlander, later traded in on Tacoma). Dealership took a week to get back on an estimate, so had local shop replace the mill. Advice is; buy a JEGS motor. Went the salvage route, 1st replacement tapped, then 2nd wouldn’t turn over, 3rd was the charm. Totally rebuilt costs more than salvage but offers no unpleasant surprises.
Lessons learned; get estimate in writing, mine verbal @$4000, wound up being $5000 after engine installs. . Which I can kind of see, they did a lot of extra work.
Toyota wouldn’t give me the time of day since it wasn’t worked on by a dealership. Made a complaint to NHSTB, they asked for receipt for work done, never heard anything else from them.
Should have had OE engine autopsied for ammo to use against Toyota. Best theory I heard was oil pump failure.
