It gets tougher after the rut which is usually mid November.

Well we have two sub species of whitetail here so we usually get 4 ruts and since it's usually pretty hot, the 1st rut of the Michigan deer happens around the 1st week of December, the Alabama deer are usually a month behind. Gun season for the zone I typically hunt runs from the Saturday before Thanksgiving till Feb 10th. The other zones start 2 weeks earlier and ends 2 weeks early I think. I have a little property I can hunt in an early zone but just hit the youth hunt and opening day there this year, since youth hunt was the next week at my usual place. Bow season doesn't open till oct 15th and muzzleloader is the 5 days between youth hunt and gun season. Doe season used to not exist or would be 3-5 days total then they went to the first week of gun and the week between Christmas and new year's (and have since gone back to that) but for several years it was all season and you could shoot 2 does or a buck and a doe a day. Now it is 1 doe in addition to a buck. It went to does all season after they limited us to 3 bucks a year in like 06 maybe, but that is the norm now so I assume that's why they pulled back doe days. 1 of the bucks must have 4 on one side (which I wish 2 of em had to be tbh) we also don't get physical tags, just have to report it through the outdoor Alabama app

Our bow ends on Jan 31st. Saw a guy out hunting on(near) my north property line yesterday afternoon. It was 5 degrees out. No thank you, but thats just a bit too cold to sitting in a tree.

Thought some might find this funny

As others have noted this past weekend was our last shot here in GA.

The creek bottom we like to hunt was running very high from the rain we’ve gotten. So high my buddy couldn’t even get to the tripod he wanted to hunt. I didn’t expect to see anything while looking at about knee deep water but ya can’t shoot em from the house. Nabbed this doe and had to wade through the bottom to go find her (I’m thinking it’s time to get some waders lol). Thankfully she only ran about 50 yards and I was able to find her pretty easily all things considered.

The rest of the weekend was not fruitful but at least we stayed dry. I saw about 9-10 doe and am kicking myself for holding out for a buck. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess. Can’t wait for next year.

Next up is trying to bring this old grizzly bear skull back to life. Been sitting in the old man’s garage for half a decade, we’ll see how much improvement I can make..
