Fitting 35’s with minimal trimming NOW ADDING LONG TRAVEL AND 934 CV’s

How well did the lower arm pivots mount onto the 4runner. Was there a need to modify the width? Did you run into any other issues besides the steering rack being different?

 

The 4 runner pivots are a little narrower so the crossbar is different but other than that it fit up really nice

 

It has Chaos links with a full float D60. Personally I’d cut that shit off and go spring under but it’s not my call

 

Got any 4runner kits available yet? Upper arms the same?

 

Unfortunately this 4Runner was too beat and molested to use as a vehicle to make jigs so I don’t have a 4Runner specific kit yet. If you are willing to do a little extra work you could make the Tacoma stuff work no problem. Hopefully I can get a decent 4Runner in the shop soon so we can start making production parts

Can anyone verify the width of the Tacoma rack gear, ie distance between the inner tie rod mounts on the rack?

Yup. Once I’m done with this next round of stuff that’s my plan as well. Trucks been down for work more times than I can count in the 4 years I’ve owned it

Hahaha there's never that. I'm just about done collecting parts for the front rebuild and starting to plan for the rear on top of collecting parts for the won ton swap on the XJ

 

Now that the tank and exhaust are out of the way it’s much easier to see what’s going on. I haven’t put a tape measure to anything yet, but my first thoughts are mounting the frame side links in the blue spots. I’d bend a tube (red) that follows the carrier bearing crossmember and weld it to that and the frame and come off of that for the lower links. That should put my links and driveshaft almost identical in length. Again, no idea what spacing or separation or degree when at ride height. Just speculating and hoping to get some feedback.

 

Do you ever plan on adding a second t-case? Single piece shaft etc? Because if you do now is the time to do it so you can build around everything and not completely bone yourself down the road when you decide to add either or both.

Before you even start thinking about mounting location etc you need to ask yourself these questions and put some real thought into it. If you plan to build a legit crawler, you will at some point want a second case. That will shorten the driveshaft and at that point it would be time to go single piece. Do you want a longer wheel base? You’re way too early In to be thinking about mounting.

 

I don’t see myself ever adding a crawl box or anything like that. It will never be a true crawler. I just want at least 20” out of the rear and the fun/knowledge of building it.

edit: not seeing how 20” will be possible without doing trailing arms. I’d like to fit 18” coilovers, but am not sure if the springs will be too soft at full droop after doing more research. Looks like 16” coilovers are max for a non trailing arm set up.

 

this is the part where you need to stop asking for other peoples advice and start doing the math specifically for your truck. google “offroad link calculator” there are a couple of excel based link calculators that are super easy to understand and as you work through the process of filling in the calc’s & changing dims you’ll learn as you go. those dims will dictate where you need to mount your pivots. there are so many different things to take into consideration and each item interacts or affects the other, lower lengths, upper lengths , spread from uppers to lowers at axle, spread from uppers to lowers at pivots bit if you work through that calculator you’ll learn it all as you go.

The #1 thing you should be looking at is fulling boxing your frame and moving anything inside the frame rails before you start anything else.

 

Yeah I’m just now crunching some of the numbers and starting to see how it will come together. I grabbed the four link calc Jake from Busted Knuckle recommended in one of his videos. Those videos are hugely helpful.

My only concern is maybe making the links too long? It’s nearly five feet from the axle tube to the carrier bearing. It would put the lowers at approx 7 degrees at ride height mounted to the bottom of the axle which sounds great, but how long is too long? Any reasonable risks in strength going that long?

 

Im a truck driver and I’m always on the road. If you need a gx470 let me know if that works. I’ve been waiting for a lower pivot kit to put on it.
