I was asked to come in and let them have my Tacoma for at least 4 hours, for some recall items. I asked what they were and they told me they would tell me when I got there. Well I went in, had to wait, as it is too far from my home, They had it for 2 hours and said that 3 of the 4 passed ok. But the Rear break light above my back window, needed to be replaced as it was part of the recall. HOWEVER they could not replace it as it had a crack in the lens, and if there was any damage they would not pay for it. I was told I would have to pay for it. I asked them how much it would be and I was told $492 I laughed and told them no way would I pay that much for them to do it. They said I would have to come back in and tell them when it was done, or the recall on it could not be terminated. I told them NO, It seems that on some trucks the light is not sealed well to the body and that it leaks, and water gets into the cab. I told them I would get a new lends off a damaged truck and call it even. NOPE it all had to be replaced, and special sealants had to be use. I said no way, and went home. Oh the cost was that high as they would have to remove all the head liner to replace the wiring. I am not going back and not going to do all of this for them to check a box Have you been called on any things for recall I have a 2016 limited

1st gen - it's got a built engine, a turbo, and waaaaaaay too much to list. 3rd gen - basic-bitch lift, S/C, Pro Wheels
Yeah, the TSB for the third brake light has been a hot item for quite some time. You could easily replace the lense\light assembly yourself and then see if they will do the seal TSB. Maybe even try a different dealership if thats an option for you.

Big clue things likely weren't going to go well.

TBH, how could they have predicted that his brake light lense was cracked? Seems that's the only real issue here. Of course Toyota won't replace an item that was cracked while in the possession of the owner. If it wasn't cracked they'd have pulled it, changed the seal, and sent him on his way.

I'd try a different dealer if possible.

The only reason the light needs replacing is because it is cracked. For the TSB, they reuse the same light and add a gasket and new sealant around it. And yes, the headliner needs to come down to access it.
