Im not sure if you have taken a panel of a 3rd gen dbl cab rear door before. But it is the most cheapest fastened handle insert on the planet.
No screws no snap into place and is a struggle to keep it in place and lined up as you put the panel back on. where i screwed up is i closed that
door moving my tools and didnt do a dry run on the door before i closed it.

That was an evasive answer, but I assume that you mean no it does not. I’m not joshing you, man! lol. I’m honestly curious. I probably won’t ever do a speaker install, but I might be able to give someone advice in the future. :)

OP, I have removed the panel many times and have left both of the cables loose for many days as I painted the door handles. To open the door from the outside I simply pulled on the green ended cable to open the door. When on the outside of the vehicle I used the outside door handle to open the door the two handles are totally independent of each other. You say you were able to get the window down, at that point did you reach outside and use the outside door handle to open the door?

@Toycoma2021 I as well have had many panels off on these trucks. But this one bit me in the ass because I didn't do a dry run before I close the finished door. You might of missed a part of my post there. I put the panel back on and then closed the door and it became locked. Now I was dealing with a closed completely finished door that now is sealed and locked. So no lucky cables just hanging around to see or pull on, and pulling on both handles did nothing when the panel is on and the door closed and locked. The hidden unseeded cables were now my nemesis because they became not engaged during panel reinstallation.

But it's all good now. I managed to pry the top of the panel off to get at the cables, and pull on the white one to open the door.

Thankfully I got some great advice on here to help me out, and I kept at it, and finally got it off. Cheers TWers

I understood the quandary just fine. My question was after getting the window down as you said you did in post #4 you simply didn't just reach outside and use the outside door handle to open the door? That may not have worked because of the "child lock" theory, but my understanding of child locks is they keep the interior handle inoperative, not the outside handle. I do not have a double cab so I have no experience with the rear doors and if they operate differently than the front doors. Another possibility would be to program the FOB to unlock all four doors - this can be done for my two doors in the center dash display. I imagine Toyota realizes families use their vehicles and the four doors can similarly be programmed on your Double Cab.

I have done exactly what you did on a low-end Chevy HHR on the passenger door which operates totally differently than the Tacoma. Like you I had to do some prying of the panel to get enough access to eventually open the door. In my case I was working on the lock mechanism and had not put it together correctly and like you did not test before closing.

I think it has something to with the lock cable being pushed / pulled slightly. Something with the internal bits of how that system operates.

Wires that were loose are for the interior handle, what loose wire is tied to the exterior door handle?

Do you know what caused the rapid fire solenoid activity when you pressed the FOB lock? Did it happen or did you try the Driver and/or passenger's lock switch too?

Morning @caribe makaira This is just my guess. I'm thinking that it had nothing lined up (cables not in slot) and was just trying to pull on the cables. I'm sure the actuator only knows to pull and spring back into place rapidly. As soon as I put it all back together that sound went away. And it all works perfectly now.
