    Coming back up from South Caroling on Fourth of July weekend we sat in traffic for about two hours on that stretch of I-84. I usually take I-84 from MA, through CT, through NY, into PA when we are heading south so I don't have to go through NJ. That was the first time I ever ran into that kind of traffic there.

    Is that kind of tie up really the norm?

    I may have to do the I-90 to the NYS line route in the future. Of course the gas price at the BJ's in Waterbury is good. And the prices where NY, NJ, and PA meet near Matamoros.

    You have to time it if you don't want to hit traffic. If you hit it during normal hours on a holiday weekend, better have a full tank of gas and a lot of patience. Whenever I have to go that route, I leave really, really early in the the morning and cruise right through.

    I live in eastern MA, so I try to get out early anyway. I like to avoid traffic on 495 and the Mass Turnpike. That said, even if I can get going by 7:00 AM, it's going to be about two hours or on a good day before I get through Hartford and into that area.

    I've done the route enough that I know if we leave northern VA coming back, it's going to be later in the afternoon by the time we come through. Maybe I'll just replan our meal breaks to compensate.
