I also carry a .45 mostly. (All the 1911s in all the sizes) (shield .45) (glock 30s) (xd .45) (etc)

I got plenty of 9’s too.
    However, I wouldn’t go lower than a 9mm.

There’s some pretty lengthy and decent studies on pistol caliber effectiveness. Across the board, science shows that 9mm thru 45acp seem to perform more or less the same, depending on circumstance. And they all suck compared to say, a rifle.

People go on and on about caliber differences, your best bet, is the one YOU shoot best.
9mm, 40S&M, 357 sig, pretty much all the same, big bleed out hole up close for 40 cal, 357 sig reached out furthest because speed, 9mm has come a long ways in wound technology.

If you don’t hit what you’re aiming at on follow up, a smaller less recoil round might help.

    9MM.

Is my caliber of choice due to capacity. I practice often and compete. Consider myself the best shooter in my group of friends, but still in a high stress situation I want more rounds available then less. Just look at any Officer involved shootings and see how many misses there are. They sure put many more rounds down range a year practicing then myself.

Depends on what I am wearing and how I am concealing.

If I am pocket carrying, it is a .380 in a pocket holster. I carried this in a suit attending a wedding and it was fully concealed and not noticeable.

I also have a 13 round 9mm pistol and 10 round .45 acp pistol that I have holsters to carry either strongside or at about 10:30 (left handed persons appendix equivalent).

Then, I even have a nice little Ruger SP101 in .357 that is highly concealable and I carry it mainly at the 10:30 position in a nice IWB leather holster.

Eventually; Not yet. I have a carry permit that's good until November 2025, but I want to try out a few different models and also take training classes. My dad was in the Navy, is very experienced with guns, and owns a few; I've been shooting with a friend, and my dad is willing to take me shooting as well, but my mom is overly worried and doesn't want me to have a gun. I honestly went and got a carry permit to see if the fact that I have an autism spectrum disorder would be an issue or even come up; Pennsylvania is one of the easiest states in which to obtain a concealed carry permit. I have never been arrested, and while I am on medication for anxiety and mild depression, I've never had mental health issues or been institutionalized. I was never asked about having autism (I'm pretty high-functioning, passed the background check with flying colors), and was out of the county courthouse with my carry permit in roughly an hour!

I have never seen the need to carry a firearm in my truck, but I feel like the concealed carry permit would make things less complicated when I did get a gun, for the purposes of bringing it to the range; Almost everyone I know in PA who owns a gun has a carry permit, even if they don't actually carry. If an armed intruder broke into my house and tried to harm me or my family, I would not hesitate to defend myself and/or them, but I'm far more interested in shooting as a recreational activity at this point. As for carrying a handgun in my truck, there's a reason I don't do DoorDash in Philly anymore!

If you don't want a 100 year old, obsolete cartridge than 40s&w is really the only option. You could do 10mm but thats more of a full sized handgun caliber.

I carried .40 for a long time but switched to 9mm recently. I shoot both caliber's equally well, but it came down to capacity before having to reload and staying within the size gun I wanted.

I don't know what caliber saint277 was referring, but it was his post I responded to.

I assume it could either be 9mm or .45 acp as those are old tried and true cartridges and not obsolete by any means IMHO.

Is there a difference between .45 ACP and just plain .45? I swear I've seen both...

All trolling aside .380 and above all work good, provided you using good hollow point ammunition.

If that's the case, then why not go with 357Sig or STW, or some other played out trope?

You have as there are a few .45 caliber cartridges. IMHO, the two most prevalent ones are .45 acp and .45 Long Colt. One is generally for semi-auto pistols (the ACP one), and the other, .45 LC is for revolvers.
