Anyone have the OEM radio in a 2012 intermittently go wonky on them?
Screen blanks out. Volume knob, including on/off function doesn't work etc.

Yes. Only happens when temps get below 30*F. So basically my radio doesn’t work all winter.

Mostly my HU displays “power off” and won’t turn back on until I restart the truck after the interior temp is Sahara like. Other times the HU appears to be functioning normally however none of the controls on the HU or the steering wheel controls do anything. Volume is also automatically muted during this time.

When outside temps are 40-120 the HU functions flawlessly.

Thanks for this. It's been happening for awhile and I think it was in warmer temperatures.

    No fix, eh?

I've got the non-nav Entune one in mine and a handful of times in the past 7 years it has crashed and then rebooted. Thankfully it still works reliably most of the time. Seems like bluetooth is what causes the crash most of the time.

Thanks. I'd have to check one mine even is. It doesn't have nav. I rarely if ever use the bluetooth. I just use it as an AM/FM radio and sometimes throw in the odd CD.

Too many to list, and I've probably forgotten a bunch.
Mine does this. Goes unresponsive, display freezes up, sometimes the steering wheel controls still work, but the touch screen ignores me. Pressing and holding the power button does a warm reboot of the radio and that basically clears it up.

It seems most of the radios (nav and non-nav) run the follow-on to the QNX OS (one I worked with decades ago). It's buggy, and I'm sure the hot-cold cycles don't do favors to the electronics, either.

Mine doesn't have a touchscreen and it's often the power button that stops working.

For a 2012 Tacoma with a non-touchscreen and non-nav am/fm/cd player? Note: I know absolutely nothing about car radios.

Is there any special procedure for this or it is simply plug a thumb drive into the aux USB port with the updated drivers? I’ll try this but I have a feeling something is internally worn in the unit and the cold temperatures cause a connection/ground to shrink resulting in a loss of contact.

    Yeah.
I had the same radio in my 2012 and do not recall having any issues. Toyota doesn't list any firmware updates for that radio. My 2009 had its radio replaced under warranty once, and the replacement eventually failed, but it was different than the 2012. It was haunted. It spontaneously ejected the CD as I was pulling in to the dealer, officially giving up the ghost.

Go to https://www.toyota.com/firmware-updates to see if there are any updates, and they provide instructions.

You can plug this info in to that website link. At a glance, it looks like you don't have a USB port, so I'd say no, you can't update it.

The link was directed to those folks who have updatable head units. Mine had some problems at first but updating the firmware fixed everything.

I believe the instructions on the website tell you what you need. It was a very simple procedure, although it took about 10 mins to update

I would not at all be surprised if it was a cold weather/loose contact thing. Every Toyota truck I've had has had that same issue after time haha

    Yeah.
There are some really good aftermarket options these days. I put a $300 Pioneer NEX HU in my daughter's 4Runner that had Android Auto (and that Apple thingy if that's your bag), and it was pretty impressive. You have to buy an extra adapter to retain steering wheel controls, and you have to wire it to the parking brake or trick it to allow it to set up the Android/Apple features. But all in all a simple install.
