I could not find a thread about a 2nd gen hence my question:

Changed out the bulb but no result. Old bulb seemed fine as well.
I see one wire coming and the passenger map light works fine so that could not be the problem.

What is the routine? Any common failure? Do I need the pull the whole plastic housing?
I checked the O/M and S/M but to no avail.

No it shares the same fuse/wire as the passenger side.

Pull the head unit down very easy, and look at the wires see if there’s any chafing somewhere

Are you sure you have the new bulb properly seated all the way into the socket?

Have you checked voltage at the socket?

A simple test light will tell you if there's power available at the socket. FWIW I have replaced those map/console assemblies from time to time for the same issue

I removed the screw in the middle of the sunglasses holder and pulled it down a couple of centimeters to remove it. Then the driver side worked as well and i could switch it on and off. When I let it bend back in place it stops working. So geeves is right with damage to the wire. I used the panel trim removal tools to pull the head unit down. But I now do not dare to go further as I really seem to have to put much force to get it out and I do not want to break it. The picture online shows 4 pins on the sides and 2 on the garage door remote. I did not even put the trim tool on the remote holder case yet. It is really tight.

It’s just two clips and the screw. Pull down the assembly from the rear most part of the console and it’ll pivot down on those 3 tabs towards the front.

Thanks Kramer. I checked if the copper receiver was maybe bent out of proportion but not the issue. I checked if there was 12v on the copper receiver which houses the bulb and there was none. So somewhere in this plastic housing from the female plug to the switches there is a crack. Maybe that is why when I tried to remove the head unit and it would not give but it bent instead and it worked.
I think I will just give up on this problem.
