New member here. Came here to learn all I can about Tacomas. I have an '06 with the 6 speed manual, and it's 4x4. Love it so far. The last Toyota I owned was an '80 model FJ40 that I bought when I was stationed in Wyoming. Sold it before I shipped overseas and regret doing so to this day. I bought it with less than 1K on the clock and it still smelled new. Brand new that year they sold for $9080. That's not a typo. I traded in a well looked after Chevy Nova and got mine for $7400. Had I known what a collectors item they were going to become, I'd have parked it in somebody's barn and thrown a tarp over it. The things we do when we're young and stupid. Anyway, thanks for letting me sign up.

Welcome to TW, biggest thing to know about the 06's is head gaskets and frame side of the motor mounts are kind of weak links.

Welcome. The head gaskets were mentioned above. I think the cut off date for the old design (prone to blowing) was November 2005 when they issued a new, improved design. Enter your VIN here to see when yours was built.

If it’s built before, the big thing is to keep an eye on the cooling system to ensure it doesn’t overheat. That’s been reported to be a ‘theme’ if the gaskets go.

    Congrats on signing up!

Thanks to both you and Key-Rei regards the head gaskets, but I think I'm good. It runs nice and cool in the summer heat and humidity here in the Piedmont of North Carolina. I've owned it about 5 years now and have had next to zero trouble out of it. I put an alternator on it a couple of years back but that's a DIY job so no big deal. I had the clutch done last week because of what I've learned is the infamous TOB chirp. It still chirped after the work, so here's what I did. I noticed that the chirp stopped if I rested my foot on the clutch pedal. I went under the dash and threaded a 10mm nut onto the short nipple that houses the clutch start bypass switch. That keeps the clutch pedal depressed just enough to stop the chirp, but not enough to interfere with normal driving. Cost me 65 cents. Permanent fix? I don't know, but I'll monitor the situation and get back with ya'll if anything changes. I know, it's redneck, but the chirp has stopped. Thanks again, guys. Have a good 'un.
