I hate Push Start

I don't bother with a fob condom while I'm out and about, but I have a small RFID blocking box that I drop my keys, knife and wallet in at home. I've always used a box for this purpose to avoid clutter but once I heard about rare instances of thieves picking up fob signals I figured an RFID blocking box would be multipurpose.

 

Most things are possible and this one is likely possible. But, how much are you willing to pay/go through to delete this feature? I don't know what's involved nor do I care to know, but I imagine that it won't be easy or cheap. You're talking about replacing a key component. This isn't like replacing the radio in a truck 30 years ago.

Just an FYI I think some of you might raise an eyebrow too. I used to drive a 2018 F150. It used a key but behaved more like a push button. What do I mean by that? I could turn the key to start and immediately release it back to run. Starter would continue to try to start the truck even with the key in the run position. I got used to doing that and had to relearn on my SR5 to hold the key in the start position until the engine catches.

So, your next truck just might use a key but still be push button under the covers. That's a lovely thought isn't it.

 

Same here. I only use mine when the truck is parked at home.

The Tacoma has had a push start for nearly 6 years now. At some point you stick in the mud luddites are going to have to get on board with it.

 

Do people actually give a fuck about things like this. Evolutionary thought is healthy.

 

You don't need the faraday cage.

Hold down the lock button. Press the unlock button twice. The red light on your fob will make two short blinks, pause, then make two more short blinks. You've effectively "turned off" the fob until you press a button on the fob. This is documented in the user's manual.

Gotta admit, seeing the title and then the first post my mental image was completely different from what the thread was about. Seeing the level of ignorance I've seen here I immediately went to someone pushing their truck to start it.

I'll never be buying a new vehicle. I'm not that OCD.

 

You are incorrect. They PTS DOES have an column lock, which I think you are referring to as an ignition lock.

 

I never gave this much thought until you brought it up. My wife’s Grand Cherokee is keyless and my Tacoma is keyed. I’ve replaced batteries in her fob a bunch of times and never in mine. You’re not wrong about the amount of batteries you’ll use.

To the back and forth, I don’t give it a ton of thought. I wouldn’t buy or not buy depending on the keyless feature. I’m much grumpier about the Jeep’s invasive stop/start programming than anything. That’s a feature I cannot stand and disable each time I drive, but the Tacoma doesn’t have it (and Toyota’s programming on the Highlander rental I had was significantly better) so it’s moot here.

 

That I have to get into my truck to start it. I used to just reach across from the passenger side and turn the key. It’s the foot on brake requirement that kills me. What makes it impossible to change? You should just need a switch for the starter motor no?

 

It’s obviously not enough to stop me from buying the truck. I love so much about it but it doesn’t make the push start any less annoying. Thanks for the help though

What's the range of the fob? My driveway is directly adjacent to my house and the spot by the back door where I typically toss my keys isn't really all that far from where the truck would be parked. (I have a keyed vehicle now but I'm curious about the fobs) Im wondering if the fob could be sitting in my kitchen and allow someone to walk up the driveway and open the door.

 

I haven't tried this personally but in the tips and tricks thread it says you can do this to override the brake requirment.

63. To start the truck without having your foot on the brake (useful for when a rider goes to the truck before you do and is sitting in the passenger seat) push the PTS button once and release, then push the PTS button and hold it till the truck starts (Approximately 10-13 seconds). This process was tested on a 2017 & 2016 Tacoma TRD Off Road with an Automatic Transmission and still requires the smart key to be in the vehicle in order to start.

 

No the range is really close to the truck. Sometimes when I have fob in my gym bag (thats in my right hand) it won't read and I need to move the bag closer to open the door.

 

If you turn off the fob, you'll save battery life. I keep spare button batteries in the truck, just in case.

In way of the the start/stop programming... Some time ago, I was on business travel. It was August. The rental car was a Chevy. The engine would shut down when I was stopped at a traffic light. And with the engine stopping, the air conditioning stopped. I would keep the car in neutral or race the engine at a light to prevent this, and to stay cool... Sometimes enough is enough.

 

that’s probably the most legitimate reason I’ve heard for not wanting it. I assume you mean to warm it up in the morning.

And I’ll be honest, I have no idea what’s actually involved with switching to a key start but a push to start is so heavily incorporated into the trucks systems that it would be quite a feat to make it happen.

 

Manual reads that the fob needs to be within 3 ft of the door handle to open the doors. The key can be anywhere inside the vehicle to start the engine.

 

I’ll be damned, this worked. I just tried it in my 2020 tundra. Had to hold it for about 16 seconds
