I wouldn't have to justify anything. If I needed a tailgate and didn't want to go through insurance, I would jump on Craigslist or FB marketplace and buy one. I would be doing nothing wrong. Ethics wouldn't even enter my mind.

Thankfully being in-Possession of stolen goods is still a crime. It’s also a crime the Police in my city take seriously. If my tailgate got stolen and I found the schmuck who bought it and put it on his truck I (nor the Police) are going to care where that person got it, just who has possession of it. Generally speaking (from what I’ve seen) the person who is in-possession of the stolen product is the one who gets popped.

As to the earlier argument about buying parts (such as a tailgate) from a vehicle outfitter, I’ve done that; the parts came with a receipt.

Where I live they don't get stolen. I guess the ones I see on Craigslist are usually legit businesses. Maybe it's a big deal where you guys are at. Nobody cutting cats off either so that's that.

In certain parts of So.Cal. Cat and Tailgate theft are more prevalent than in others. Just last month my best friend was dropping a bid off at a local Police Department, he was parked in the parking lot of the Police station and when he went to leave he walked-up on someone attempting to steal the tailgate on his Silverado.

That said I don’t hear much about it happening in my neighborhood, however my Taco is generally backed-in against a wall, my other two trucks have either the hose clamp deterrent or an aftermarket lock installed on their tailgates and they get backed into my driveway.

Doesn't the LOCKING TAILGATE feature on the late models negate the need for other anti-theft deterrents?

The 2021 locks, can't steal the gate when it's locked...

Where do those electrical plug connector covers for the back up harness, that are depicted in the owner's manual, come from? Dealer item? I didn't see them in the tool kit.

I have waited almost 2 years to have my tailgate fixed/replaced because I couldn't afford to spend $1000+. Then you mentioned comprehensive insurance. Wow. I checked with my insurance agent and he said YEP. I could have had this done 2 years ago for just my $250 deductible. Thank you Cleanwilly!
