Exactly. There is a slider internally with a bronze face, there are two bearings on the pinion that are not sealed. These all wear stupid fast with dirt intrusion. It will also pull dirt to the hydraulic seals and cause leaks. Currently, I have about an inch of slop in my wheel because my rack is absolutely spanked.

I’m not going to sit here and toot my own horn, but from what I’ve seen in this group I’ve probably been the one that’s put this setup through it’s paces the most. There’s nothing mine hasn’t seen. The lack of boots is in fact the ONLY weak link.

 

But it does. Them teeth come within probably 1/4” of the internal seal. Over time it’s packing into the seal to create a leak. That’s exactly what we found the last time I resealed the rack.

 

If JD thought this was an actual issue, they would have solved it. It's a non-issue. This is off road FFS. Things wear out, get replaced. There's been dozens of slide racks purchased and no one I've heard of besides on here saying anything about it. Cry me a river so I can canoe down it laughing all the way.

 

White mark is where the Side seal sits. At full lock it’s close. Even if you ignore the dirt intrusion, the rack it’s self rusts like crazy and that alone is going to make seals fail.

 

You going to canoe 15k miles on that river too.

 

Excuse the hell out of me for wanting to make something good, better. It’s not a damn race truck that needs to be tore down every couple of times it goes out. Nor is that what I want it to be. Maybe I made a mistake going with the slide rack after all.

 

What a terrible mentality to have. As Cory has demonstrated it does cause issues, and it’s been the sole reason myself and others haven’t bought it.

 

I think that's a great reason not to buy it. You'll be much happier not complaining about non issues.

 

The development of parts is all about getting numbers out there all in different situations to see how it all works. It may seem all good to go but you’re always going to have those that find a weak link or issue. Again, it’s not complaining. It’s pushing an already good product to be better. Kinda the purpose of R&D. The best builders in the world can put a new product out only to find there are issues. It’s no fault of the builder or anybody else.

How do you think the off road world has gotten where it is today? By finding failure points and improving them.

I’d bet money, if JD came up with a solution to this, you would be doing it to yours too.

Why would ANYBODY knock an attempt at increasing longevity of parts?

 

Because not all products and systems were designed and built for every type of situation, trail, climate, and vehicle. There are trade offs until that is realized it's beating a dead horse.

 

There’s almost always a way. Most of the time it takes a collaboration of like minds that say “lets fix this”. All I’ve ever hoped when bringing up this topic is to maybe get minds thinking and a solution to be found.

 

I thought the seal thing was figured out? See attached image. Looks like a lip seal to me

 

The passenger side isn’t really the issue. On the driver side, there are teeth in the shaft. That doesn’t have a full seal around it at all times.

 

I kind of regret ever bringing it up. All it did was create drama. I miss the days when enthusiasts worked together to make stuff awesome. Either that, or that’s just how this forum is. I do apologize for bringing drama into everybody’s day. It’s probably just time I look at stuffing a tundra rack as far forward as I can.
