Anyone have a recommendation for a lock that is thin enough to fit through the mounting pins for the maxtrax?

The problem with any lock that's small enough to fit through the mounting pins, is that it's easy to bypass (break).

I'd recommend a cable lock that goes through the handles.

not the best but 1. Its a deterrent for honest people and 2. Maybe it will work. Its a gun safe lock so its probably something decent but not anything great.

I used the same solution at first. Like you said, it's a good visual deterent.

I’ve got four luggage padlocks, one on each post. No sliders or steps though so if someone is going to cut them off the Prinsu they’re going to have to climb up there to do it.

Yea I’m in a low crime area and think a basic lock will be enough for me. I have a couple zip ties on it now so at least it requires more effort than just sliding off the mounts...
    Thanks for the ideas

For some reason I’m stuck on using a lock in the designated lock hole on the mounting pins. I bought a lock yesterday and it doesn’t fit through the hole. It’s amazing I’m having such a hard time finding one that will fit. I finally just ordered a cheap luggage lock that had a thin cable and that should fit. I can’t imagine why they couldn’t make the hole 1mm wider to accommodate most locks that will actually do anything. Maybe a stronger cable lock is in order for the future but like I said low crime area so I’m not that worried.

    Are gun locks weather resistant?

Mine was just rained on and no rust but it isnt stainless 0BFDBB70-C432-41F4-A67B-6E867CE43287.jpg

I would think most… all guns that people care about are stored inside not under the elements so logically I am sure the locks aren't made typically with rust in mind but I am no expert.

Here's an idea...leave them off the vehicle when not off-roading. Or put on a tonneau cover and throw them in the bed where they can't be seen.

I promise that either of those choices will result in less people laughing at you.

TSA luggage locks or one of those included in the case gun lock cables through the handle are good ways to stop honest people from being dishonest.

I think I have a few cable locks laying around if you can't get ahold of one.

Not specifically but some may hold up better than others. Its designed for an ostensible use case where its stored in a safe or other resistant container already so it wasn't meant to be. Those things are like a dollar to make, so you can't expect much from them.

That said, a little WD40 once in a while may abate the rust a little bit.

I used the 30mm Master Lock that you can get at Home Depot. Also fit through the latch on my Roam Adventure cargo box so it was nice to have something that could serve dual purposes. A little bit of rust after a couple years but not bad, and cheap to replace.

As far as people stealing your Maxtrax, while it is certainly a possibility, I think they are probably not something that people recognize as valuable or know the resale on. I recommend locking them, but I wouldn't worry about a master class of thieves coming specifically for them like your catalytic converter.

I don’t care who’s laughing at me. My boards saved me and it was my only recovery option stuck back on a forest road buried in 3ft of snow. They have also been used to rescue a Subaru. So they’ve been used twice this winter already. Laugh all you want. It’s also nice to have them on the roof when they’re dirty I can keep my enclosed bed clean and free of mud.
I’ve ordered a tsa style lock that will fit and that’s all I need to worry about.
    Cheers

Now that you mention it, it is kinda funny innit?

I have a $1500 tent and $600 of maxtrax accessable to Joe Public and my concern and the statistically probable theft will be my cats. o_O

    Gotta watch those sly mofos!
Yea I’m not too worried about theft hopefully the Tsa will be enough.
Glad to have them mounted to roof instead of the bed and digging for them.

Don't have to justify yourself to us if you like it. I have a similar setup, and TBH I have used them more when I'm not planning on needing them than when I do, like stuck cars in snowy parking lots, etc.

But you have to prepare yourself to get lumped in with the IG Broverlander stereotype. Just is what it is.
