Tires, should I go back to OEM size?

I know this is a subjective question, but when I purchased my truck new it had P265/70R-16 tires installed. IIRC, the door jam sticker indicates P245/65R-16.

I will need new tires soon, but not from tire wear, but from age. They have about 45k miles, and probably have another 25K in them, however, doing some maintenance last week I noticed dry rot cracks in between the threads. The current tires were installed late 2014.

So, I was thinking the next set should be cheaper because I will not wear them out, I only drive the truck about once a week just enough to keep battery charged and get the engine to operating temp.

Should I go with the P245 size or will it look too bad on the truck?

Put stock size on and get better gas mileage. Especially if your not really using the truck.

Post a pic of the truck. Hard to say if it will look bad without seeing other mods if any. Also just get a battery trickle charger instead.

P265/70/16 IS a stock size. They offered both sizes from the factory depending on the model. The tires you currently have on your truck are less than 1/2" wider than 245/75/16's. They are the same height. Fuel mileage won't change at all for such a small difference.

The only advantage to going to 245's is that they might cost a few dollars per tire less. Might not, you'll just have to price tires.

In my experience 265/75/16's are usually cheaper than either, and there are far more options to choose from. It is a much more common size. They would be as big as you can go with no modifications and no real downsides, no change in power or fuel mileage with that size. They will be the same width as your 265/70/16's, but about 1" taller.

Agree with the above. To add a couple minor points, 265/75-16s look better (IMO) and they also correct the typically high-reading speedometer.

if you dont really drive the truck that much, go with the stock size. save some money on the mpg and a better driving experience. bigger tires will make your truck work harder and make it more unpleasant to drive.

Heck I'd stick with the 265s simply because your truck is a 4x4. 265/70/16 isn't that much bigger than stock.

If you're wondering about the look, park next to a stock tacoma and compare

    An alternative...............

Leave what you have on there and get a price quote for Carvana or Carmax to buy it from you.

You'll make more on the sale than you'd imagine, save on a tire purchase, save on insurance, and not be bothered with worrying about weekly drives.

Very true. I've seen a lot of low mileage tacomas for sale. You will get a lot for your truck if its in good condition.

Thanks for the replies, will give it some thought before I pull the trigger on a set of tires.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned in this thread..... Most major outlets, such as America's Tire (Discount Tire) will price match any legitimate offer.
Just be sure to compare apples-to-apples.... that is, include all costs like mount & balance, taxes, disposal fees etc etc.

As others have said, 265/70/16 is a stock option. I have a TRD Off-Road 4WD and that's the size mine came with and is on the door jam. For me, I will probably keep my size or move to a 265/75/16 when the time comes.

Some of this Some of that
If I were you I’d keep the 265. The size difference isn’t that much realistically you won’t notice a difference in fuel or acceleration.. these trucks ride and handle great with that size. And they look better too

As noted above in a few posts, 245/75-16 and 265/70-16 are both stock sizes -- on different trim levels.
And they have the same diameter. 265/70-16 is just 20mm wider than 245/75-16.
Either size will work fine with very little difference in ride, or handling, or fuel economy.
To my eye, 265/70-16 looks slightly beefier. 265/75-16 looks better still at 1" taller.
