I have a Motorola G7. I want to play mp3's from my phone by USB cable. I don't want to stream. The 2014 head unit will recognize an iPhone by usb and work fine but will not recognize the Motorola. Is there special cable or application required for the Moto g7?

You would need a music program that is recognized by the radio. Without the corresponding program that is recognized by the radio, the radio doesn’t know where to find the files for playback. Ideally, the radio should be “Android Auto” capable. I haven’t been in Android for a few years, so unfortunately I can’t point you to a program. Sorry.

The radio can use Android Auto but that comes with some down side for me, ie, tracking and I don't need navigation.

Android auto isn’t what I mean. AA is an app that organizes app functionality FOR a phone/headunit. It allows for an android music app to work ONLY through AA. You said you wanted to stream through USB, so I assumed you wanted to bypass AA. If I’m right in your desire, what I meant is that there is no android music app that can communicate music file location to a headunit directly, not like Apple has always done.

You should still be able to turn off location settings in your phone, disabling tracking. But if you use it for other apps, you’d need to turn it back on first.

If you just want to stream your music through USB (not Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal etc.) just connect a USB stick loaded with your saved/ripped music. Done.
