Update as of today. My 2017s (less than 50k miles) emissions code issue has been identified. 3rd cylinder had a hole in the head above it, and that's what was causing the "improper air fuel ratio cylinder 3" code to appear.

I'm in a much nicer Toyota Venza until they fix my truck courtesy of the dealership, so that's nice at least.

    Just enjoy your ride...
I went from a jeep to a takoma due to pricing. Even mods are cheaper over here. I can still do the same things... better Yet, it is a four banger!
2wd... and I can still take standard trails... Reason is, I still have to drive it back home...

I would have bought a 2021 if they weren't so damn expensive. I just got my 15 for 27k with 36k miles. I test drove the 2021 and the transmission annoyed the ever loving piss out of me. They are slick looking trucks but I don't think I'll have any regrets with my 15.

sorry, been out a bit working. You are correct, so here goes the appropriate 2nd stuff. Also the TSB covers all trucks up to the date of the lawsuit in 2017. The rust issues are squarely on 1st and 2nd gen trucks. Although I am sure a few 3rd gens snuck through. The frame on the 3rd gen is a higher alloy content and I am sure this was done for rust prevention. As for no dog in the fight, you no longer have a 2nd gen? Any truck can rust. But the problem was squarely during the 2nd gen time period.

Can you provide proof of higher alloy being used for the frame?

And yes I do have a 2nd Gen. I meant I have no issues eith either of you. I like all generations of Tacoma and think they will all be about the same in terms of reliability. My 2015 doesn't look anything like those. I also had a first gen that did have rust and was still solid as a 18 year old truck.

Question is, why wasn't there any rust proofing done by yourself, or others after you bought the truck knowing any vehicle driven in most of the northern half of the country is going to rust sooner or later, or is this the first vehicle you ever owned?. Fluid flim is better than nothing applied once a year, its been around for as long as i can remember. There are even better options like cosmoline that other new vehicles come with from the factory like bmw, and mercedes. Btw, good luck with the domestic brands when their frame's rust the same way, and believe me they will if not rust proofed. At least toyota has been making good replacing frame's if their in a 10 year window from purchase. All the domestics at that year of ownership is going to tell you to go pound sand. Living in the salt belt, its your responsibility to take care of these trucks rust proofing them if you want them to last. Everybody likes to spend hrs. washing, and waxing the shinny side, but they forget the underneath takes a beating to....show a little tlc under there.

Sorry, here is what I remember
    https://pressroom.toyota.com/2015-naias-2016-tacoma-debut-fay/
"Mike Sweers … Chief Engineer of Toyota trucks …and his team at our Toyota Technical Center here in Ann Arbor …set out to make America’s favorite mid-size pickup … even better.

We started with the frame … adding high strength steel to increase rigidity and overall strength. "

because I don't have a 2nd gen. As for fluid film, yes I know it works, but damm it's nasty stuff. I use to put it under my jeep to keep rust away and I sprayed it in the garage and it made the floor so slick, that I ended up scubbing the floor for an hour to get the stuff off it. My fault of course.

While I want to believe they did something to improve on this, they did not specify adding rust protection in any way. Higher strength steel doesn't mean that it's more resistant to rust, actually in most cases this is the opposite way around. The rust proofing comes in the metal prep and the finish they add to the frame and of course rust resistant alloys in the steel. The frames look to be exactly the same as 2.5 Gen Tacomas and from what I've seen, start to rust in all the same places. Though with the 2.5 Gens already being 7-10 years old, and the 3rd Gens being almost 6 at max, I haven't seen a frame swap yet, but perhaps I haven't looked hard enough. I was seeing early 05-11 frames being swapped out as early as 1-2 years young.

It doesnt say that they did a finishing to improve protection. So you are right about that. It does say that they improved the steel. Higher strength.
