I was finally able to borrow my neighbors Hobart 190 to start welding the sliders. This whole process has taken longer than I thought but I am learning a ton!

This was my first time welding round tube and my welds weren't great, although this Hobart covers a lot of mistakes.

Onto paint and then finally getting them on the truck!

Finally got the sliders painted and on the truck. I wasn't really happy with a lot of my welds but between the 4 sides and the plug welds they're not coming off and that is the main thing. Its been a great project and I've learned a ton. Time to start on a high clearance rear bumper.

    Georgetown - 12/26/21

Ran up to Georgetown for the day with @Big Tree Builds and others. It started snowing shortly after we made it to town and dumped the rest of the day. Lots of cool trucks up there. We had a blast making fresh tracks in powdery snow! It was pretty much our first time off-roading in the snow so we took it easy to begin with until we were comfortable, then we went for it on some of the offshoots. Almost got stuck in a huge mud-hole that was up to my doors. Truck ran good and we were able to help some people who were stuck as we came down the mountain.

Got the tacoma up in the garage this weekend. Extended brake lines, 4x Innovations shackle hangers, heavy duty shackles, u-bolt flip, superbumps, and Bilstein B110s are on the truck. The rivets were a pain in the butt with the tools I had but I eventually got them out in about 5 hours. I've been wanting to do this for a while, the rear feels super dialed and planted.

Did a lot to the truck in the last few weeks. OEM LCAs, rebuilt driveshaft, wired more EAF lights, and top spacer to correct taco lean. Need to do rotors and pads, transmission fluid change, and an alignment then its off to Death Valley and Nevada.

These past few weeks have been fun.

Planned a trip with some friends to Death Valley, getting things in order I replaced my LBJs. Took my truck in for an alignment and found out my UCAs were toast. Said screw it lets go wheeling.

    IMG_6550.jpg

Came back and replaced the UCAs. Then my friend realized his tierods were bad the day before we left so we put some Autozone specials in.

    IMG_6557.jpg

Finally got to Alabama Hills just in time to meet up with our other friends for a full weekend.

    DSC03756.jpg

Got into the park and we were ready to hit some trails.

    DSC03786.jpg

We did Crankshaft to Eureka Dunes and then up Steel Pass before finding camp in Saline Valley. The Jeep was too low to the ground and bellied out a lot on the rocks, couldn't hang with the Toyotas LOL.

The next morning we went to Cerro Gordo and got ready to head home.

No real breaks except the Sequoia ran over its skid plate and he accidentally jumped it and ruined his alignment. DT was still running good which was good for me because I was headed back to Death Valley in less than 2 weeks!

Been pretty busy dinking around on the truck. Few day-trips here and there.

    IMG_6685.jpg

One of my buddies rammed into the back of me sliding on ice so its off with the bumper soon. Just need to get some tube and nut up to cut my bed.

Also let my friend take my truck up the creek, she did pretty well!

    IMG_6727.jpg

Pulled the shell, goal for this year is simple, lightweight, and effective both capability and cost-wise.

    IMG_6738.jpg

The OME 9000 with 886s rode horrible for me, I picked up somew 5100s and 887s which are waaaay softer and my CV angles are much better.

    IMG_6740.jpg

Waiting on more parts to come in before the truck goes under the knife, gonna tuck the front and rear of this thing for ultra clearance!

Got off work early yesterday, said screw it and took out a leaf of the HD Dakar leaf pack, also put a axle shim in. First time in over a year my truck has no vibrations and no axle wrap!

    IMG_6749.jpg

Took me about 45 mins to get the leafs out since I've done it so many times. Overall it took me a little less than 4 hours to get it all done. Still measuring at about 2.5 inches of rake but I don't mind it. The truck has never driven so smooth, super happy with it overall, everything super budget but very plush and decent travel for essentially stock suspension.

Did you pull the “traditional” 3rd leaf out of the pack or a different one? Are you currently running the 887 with the arb bumper? Any pics of ride height and hub to fender measurement? Thanks!

Yea I pulled the third leaf down, I almost pulled one of the overloads too but decided to keep it in for when I am hauling dirtbikes, and I'm glad I did. I do have the 887s with the ARB bumper, no winch. I don't have any pictures at ride height or measurements right now but I can get some today.

The 887s with the ARB bumper ride really well IMO, especially coming from the 886 which was too stiff for me. The ARB is coming off soon and I am doing the Warfab chop kit with a 10,000 lb winch, I am thinking that setup will around the same weight or a little lighter.

Heres a pic at ride height. Rear is a little high but like I said I don't mind the rake. I'm also going to be making a rear tube bumper in the next few weeks so that should add some weight and bring it down slightly.

    Hub to fender is 23.5in.

Thanks for posting that additional info. I’m currently on 886’s with more weight than you but still experiencing the “topping” out over speed bumps and larger road imperfections. Searching for a way to mitigate that.

Yea I experienced that for over a year and it drove me nuts. The 887s are much plusher but still plenty firm for me. I’d give them a thumbs up so far!

Went camping in Nevada this weekend with some friends. The new 5100s feel 100x better off-road and loving the open bed with just a ground tent. Keeping it simple with some good people and loving it. KISS mentality.

Wheeled for a bit, found some good lines and got the Sequoia to do a decent little wheel lift, exercised our second amendment and finished the day with some beer around a fire. Good fun.

Camper shell sold, reallocating funds towards getting ready for the Rubicon this year. Picked up some tube to start on the rear bumper, have a Warfab chop kit otw, and getting skids sorted. Winch is collecting dust in the garage until I can get the chop kit and weld it up.

Recent trip to Prairie City -

    IMG_6819.jpg

Also got out on the dirtbike, I've been riding in the Sierras and Nevada desert since I was a kid. Feels good to have the truck bed back to haul the bike!

Things are moving on the truck again after piling up some parts. Went camping this weekend. Came back and threw on some front bumpstops. Started on the rear bumper build, cut the bed and got some numbers, the tube bender we were using was kinking the tube bad so outsourcing the bends this week and will wrap it up this weekend.

Picked up a crash bar and cut it up to make a mini bumper while I wait for my chop kit from Warfab. Also wrapped up the bumper build yesterday, just need to paint it.

Truck is starting to take the form I want: simple, cheap, and effective. Function over form.
