This would not be for my tacoma, but for the Jeep I bought. It's a 94, and he has really bad flaking clear coat on the hood and the roof. I have called a few Auto body places and they all say the only solution is a repaint of the hood. I hired a guy to do some light body work on it a week ago, and he told me he can send off the peeling clear coat and it would look 10 times better, but it would just be a dull finish. Is he just trying to get a few more bucks out of me, or will that work? I just wanted to look a little more presentable than it does right now.

You will need to sand through the clear to the base color. If he can do it without cutting through the color re-clear and buff to match current fender finish. I would not apply clear on top of old clear that is already flaking off. The issue is there is poor adhesion. This is likely why the clear is coming off. Base/clear paint is about how well one layer sticks to the other. There are two ways to get them to stick together one is mechanical and the other is chemical.

Thank you. I believe he said he would just sand off the flakes and leave a "dull" finish. The jeep is black, and I am OK with the dull as long as the ugly flakes are gone, or mostly gone anyway.

Yeah just know that the rest may start flaking as well. Have you tried taking an air nozzle and blowing it off? Or even a pressure washer? Another thing to know is that base coat is porous and will allow moisture to get to the primer and then to the metal increasing the chance of rust. The top coat is less porous and you generally wax it to seal it.

I have not really done anything other than wiping it with a towel and it flakes off pretty badly. The whole Jeep is not in great condition, but the hood is a huge eyesore so I'm just trying to make it look slightly better. And yes, I am aware that once the clear coat comes off it will look worse much faster, but I think it's better than what it is now.

I definitely understand. Paint work ain’t cheap. Try the air nozzle trick it may save you from paying someone else to do it. If you were near me we would fix it in my brothers paint shop at cost of materials and maybe a pizza. Fairly easy work if you have the equipment.

Appreciate all the help. And I think I do have a compressor here I can try.
