Yep, it's all melty here. This last week was full-on miserable. Now the snow is melting onto my inclined driveway.

Highway 2 is somewhere between meh, and not going today between Troy and Libby, and I hear it gets worse just wast of Libby and beyond. The real trick is the county maintained roads in the outlying neighborhoods, I actually had to winch my dad (2011 F350 diesel) back INTO the driveway, when he got back, or he would have been blocking the road. Wish I had grabbed my phone for pictures, dang it.

Do most of the MT folks run block heaters on their Tacoma's out there?

If youre parking outside its not a bad idea. Kinda depends on the area of the state too, some are more prone to long stretches of below zero temps.

Bozeman/Belgrade area. Was thinking of spending some time up there if I can get the spot I stayed at in the fall, I drove up to get my GFC installed.

I haven't ever and we have streches of -20 to -30 for weeks usually. Hard starting but never fails really.

My block heater in one of my trucks came out on the trail once, dumped all my coolant. So im a bit bias in saying not to do it.

Good to know. Yeah that would not be good breaking it and coolant being dumped out on the trail.

Bozangeles weather is less extreme than many other places in the state, and you'll probably be fine without it. However, if your Taco has never spent much time in the cold, I say get the block heater. Then you'll always have it (save tearing it off while off-roading), and you're already prepared for your TBD adventure to Alaska. Do check it from time to time to make sure you're not losing coolant.

I just carry a battery jump pack which does the trick on the occasions it doesn't want to start.

if youre just visiting you would probably be OK. just make sure your battery is in good shape and has a good cold cranking amp rating.

Yup I have some newer batteries in the truck, keep a jump pack with me as well. I also before trips make sure the battery is charged up via trickle charger.

I have never had a block heater in my Tacoma and have had no trouble starting in -20 to -30. It might complain the first few cranks but usually it starts up and does warm up fairly quickly. I run all synthetic though in my engine and tranny as well as my diffs.
Now my Tahoe is a different story lol.:rofl::thumbsup:

Thankfully the gen 2 block heater isn't in the coolant line.

Nice thing about the block heater is the truck doesn't complain when starting on the cold days.
